The victorious cricket hero Muttiah Muralitharan has set a record in the cricket world as well as in the philanthropic world.

This news may be old. But the lesson is fresh!

A new chapter in the history has begun. Maybe the legend of Muttiah Muralitharan has just begun this new chapter with the ending of his Test career in a blaze of glory, scaling the 'Cricket Mount' with his glorious 800th wicket! Yes, he has decided to retire from his test career and involve himself as a full timer in social work showing an exemplary way to thousands of legendary people! Standing on the pinnacle of his cricket career, Muttiah Muralitharan is bidding farewell to cricket!

Muttiah's historical achievement

The off-spinning legend of Muttiah Muralitharan reached the peak with an astonishing 800 wickets while he was playing a crucial role in Sri Lanka's remarkable 10-wicket victory over India on the final day of the first test match. He dismissed the Indian players Harbajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha to reach this pinnacle of his record victory. He proved his mettle with jubilant cheers in front of his family members, the President of his country and thousands of his fans. His feat of 800 wickets through his excellent bowling in 133 matches at 22.72 is an invincible record that, like Donald Bradman's average of 99.94, will stand for ages. Muttiah was the main architect of his team's 54 victories, claiming more than 40% of the team's wickets.

The ever-winning bowler

Right from his age of 10 years, Muttiah wanted to be a fast bowler in those times. His ambition was well developed during his studies at St Anthony's College in Kandy. He pursued his ambition even amidst the anti-Tamil attacks in which thousands of his country men were killed. Even burning of his family's biscuit factory, a cottage enterprise and the source of livelihood, could not cow down his desire to become an invincible bowler. From the very beginning of his test career against Australia in 1992, Muttiah braved all the odds against his golden goal.

Today, Muttiah stands as the highest wicket taker in Tests with 800 wickets in 133 matches. His dexterous wrists, supple fingers and enormous strength of will power could create histories. He has bagged to his credit an incredible 67 five-wicket hauls. He is also the foremost wicket-taker in the One Day Innings, with 515 wickets in 337 matches with an average of 23.07.

Muttiah of exemplary characters

Not content with being a symbol in the cricket world, Muttiah has set a record by embracing humanitarian work through his philanthropic services. Muttiah has been bearing the responsibility of his team with lightness, humor and appreciable simplicity. His admirable personality is adored all over the world.

Muttiah has become the symbol of philanthropy

Brian Thomas, an ex-journalist who is now Sri Lanka Cricket's media manager has stated, "Muralitharan's socio-cultural impact on Lankan society is immense. He is conscious of this and is doing lot." He has helped generate funds to reconstruct houses and work for rural empowerment in over 25 villages along the coast, with the help of many other benevolent people. He has helped thousands of people who were hit by the tsunami in 2004, through his Foundation of Goodness's project and through the help of United Nations Organization.

Away from Politics

As Muttiah's wife Madhimalar has stated, "Muralitharan wants to be away from politics and he will never join politics. That much he has made clear." She further says, "Muralitharan also refrains from making any political commentaries. He says he does not need to be a politician to help people."

By bidding farewell and leaving the cricket stage voluntarily, plunging himself into philanthropic activities, Muttiah has again confirmed that he is rarest of the rare!
