December 11, 2011  by: Paulose  Points: 25   Category: Health    Views: 1224

Modern life style and fast food have created a lot of problems in dental health.

Face is the index of the mind and teeth are index of the face. They give shape and beauty to the face. A radiant smile of the pearly teeth add luster to any face.

Dental health maintenance starts from conception itself though teeth appear only after some months after birth. As one gets older teeth are affected and lost without proper care. Hence it is necessary to take care of the teeth from the beginning itself.

Ten tips for the dental hygiene

1) Dental hygiene starts from conception itself

Even at the fetus stage in the womb of the mother, a child's teeth begin to form between the third month and sixth month of pregnancy. What the mother eats also affects the teeth in the developing stage of pregnancy. Hence the mother should receive sufficient amount of nutrients, especially vitamins A, C and D, protein, calcium and phosphorus for normal formation of baby teeth. A balanced diet can provide adequate amount of nutrients to nourish both the mother and the child. A good care and a balanced diet lay the foundation for the infants to have strong teeth and healthy gums.

2) Brushing habit from infancy

Even before the growth of the teeth, early attention is necessary in thoroughly cleaning the infants gum after each feeding. The gum should be cleaned with a washcloth or gauze pad to stimulate the gum tissue and remove food articles. When the baby's teeth start to grow they may be cleaned with a soft bristle tooth brush that is designed specially for babies.

3) Brushing twice a day after meals

It is good to practice a fixed brushing routine in the morning and in the evening. Brush the teeth well and floss well cleaning in between your teeth. Remove the food particles hidden between the teeth that can cause tooth decay. Backside of the teeth should not be neglected. Children should be trained from the beginning to brush and floss properly. It should not be a simple ceremony of giving your teeth a quick rub. The aim of brushing is to remove all the waste substances.

4) Changing the tooth brush periodically

You should change your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months. Using an old toothbrush that has bristle damage cannot properly clean your teeth. Using a hard brush may damage your teeth and gums over time.

5) Avoiding tobacco

Avoid the oral use of tobacco by smoking, chewing tobacco or using snuff. These tobacco habits rot the teeth, damage the gums, and create a lot of diseases.

6) Using good toothpaste

Globalization has brought to the market varieties of toothpastes with various attractive promises. Nowadays fluoride has been recognized as an effective agent for prevention of tooth decay. Using toothpaste that contains fluoride will prevent tooth decay and can also restore your enamel.

7) Beware of sugary foods

Every one knows that excessive sugar intake will cause tooth decay. Many people do not realize that continuous nibbling at snacks throughout the day will also result in problems with teeth.

8) Curtail thumb sucking habit

Thumb sucking is one of the natural reflexes in children. This habit automatically decreases after the age of two. But in some cases, if a child continues vigorous and prolonged thumb sucking past the age of four it can create problems with normal dental development. Hence steps should be taken to curtail this habit.

9) Eating for the maintenance of teeth

You need plenty of calcium for your teeth. It is essential for the teeth as well as your bones. It is better to drink milk, fortified orange juice and to eat yogurt, broccoli, cheese, and other dairy products. You can also take a calcium supplement, taking different doses according to your age and necessity as per prescription. Calcium and Vitamin D are necessary for maintaining the health of gums and teeth. Vitamin B complex is also essential for the protection of gums and teeth from cracking and bleeding. Copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium are also required for maintaining healthy dental hygiene.

10) Visiting the dentist periodically

Periodical guidance of the dentist is necessary for maintenance of healthy dental hygiene. Prevention is better than cure. Visiting the dentist once in six months can prevent many complications of dental health. Right from infancy, dental visit should be scheduled for a routine dental examination followed by periodical visits to check for the progress of the primary teeth.

Dental hygiene is very important to maintain normal health. Negligence of dental care may turn to be fatal in course of time. Hence it is important to know more about dental hygiene and follow good dental habits from infancy itself. If you are thinking of brightening your smile, start with timely hygienic practices of dental care at an early age!
