Encounters With The Supernatural

The Supernatural cannot be explained and has to be experienced

The supernatural is something that cannot be explained easily. It is something that happens out of the ordinary and some event or occurrence take place that cannot be explained easily. The supernatural may manifest itself through a man or a force of nature.

Science does not accept that anything can be supernatural. They would like to give a rational explanation though all the time this cannot suffice. An example is an incident that shook the scientific community a few years back. To be precise this was in Sept 1995. At that time devotees visiting the various shrines and temples of the Lord Ganesh discovered to their amazement that the God Ganesh would partake of milk held up in a plate to the deity's lips. After some time the milk would disappear and believers thought that the milk had been drunk by the deity himself. Incidentally this phenomenon was widely reported and occurred in various temples of lord Ganesh all over the world. The event was also widely reported by the press and the news channels CNN and BBC. Scientists tried to explain it as a part of surface tension and evaporation. But observers who witnessed this phenomenon thought otherwise.

Similarly while on a visit to the far eastern base of Khumbi gram near Silchar I was informed that a man with uncanny ESP powers was living in a village some 10 km away from the air base. On reaching the place I met the old man who had one eye. he offered me a cup of tea and then as I drank it he rattled off some uncanny observations like my movement out to a place near the sea and he also told me the exact no of windows and doors in my house about 3000 km away at Indore. I was suitably impressed this was in 1984. On a subsequent visit back to this base in 1992 I learnt that the old seer had passed away.

In the mountain state of Himachal Pradesh a form of evil spirit called the 'Chaleda' is very much seen and believed in. Numerous people have claimed to been accosted by the chaleda who sometimes took the form of a dog or cat and even a small child. The aim of the chaleda is to frighten and than kill his victim. The Chaleda is supposed to be the spirit of a dead man who has not achieved salvation. Such a spirit is supposed to belong to a man or woman who has committed some heinous crime in this world and is subsequently denied entry into to the spirit world till his sin is expiated.

The field is vast and a deeper study is called for. There is no doubt that science cannot explain all these phenomena. But it would be naïve to deny the existence of the supernatural. The Bible and most religious thought accept this aspect of our world. Maybe a full fledged study of this phenomenon is called for. Perhaps in due course of time this frontier of knowledge will also be breached.
