Reading habit gives a good companion. As C.S. Lewis says, "We read to know we are not alone." In the computer era it is even more important.

The saying about reading "Reading makes one perfect" is not an exaggeration. Reading habit opens new vistas of knowledge and takes one to wonderful worlds. The Chinese philosopher Confucius says, "No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance."

Reading skill is an important one to be developed in early years of education.

Reading habit in computer age

1) In the modern computer age reading materials so far referred to as real books, newspapers and magazines are being replaced by e-books, online newspapers and magazines.

2) Computer reading is also a good skill much needed in modern lifestyle. Although computer has opened free access to a wealth of information, it also provides an abundance of distractions that affects reading considerably. Researchers warn that distracting activities such as computer games are harming children's reading.

3) Results of researches reveal that the reading ability of eight to ten-year-old children has slumped in countries where households have at least one computer. They point out that since 1991 average reading ability had fallen in countries, including the U.S.

4) Professor Monica Rosen, Professor of Department of Education at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, who led the research on declining reading habit of children, says, "Reading ability falls as leisure use of computers increases."

5) Studies reveal that children spend less time in enjoying a good book as they spend more leisure time on computers.

6) Further, studies state that computer activities have impaired reading skills considerably, because the computers have stolen the time that had been spent for leisure reading.

7) Reading skill is not so simple as it requires not only physical but also mental and emotional readiness. If it is interconnected with unpleasant experiences, children may not develop it. Children are more attracted with other activities of entertainment in computer than reading materials.

8) Computer usage causes eye strain by the monitor's glare and also causes discomfort by the position in front of the computer. This results in an aversion for reading.

9) Poor eye sight is commonly found among children today which affects reading habit. Watching movies and other activities on computer lead to this defect.

Make reading skill a positive development of computer age

Advances in technology have greatly increased the tools that we can make use of to develop reading habit and improve reading skills. Computer can well be used positively to tune up specific skills of reading. It can be very useful in developing reading skills such as comprehension and vocabulary.
