Introduction
Football is the most popular sport in Belgium. It has been played there since the end of 19th Century. They formed a national football association on 1895, which brought a sort of order and composition in their team. They played their first match as a national team on May 1st 1994 which they drew 3-3 against France. They had played several football matches before this match, but their squad was having players from other nationalities mainly English, so they were not counted.

Their league system
Football grew rapidly by the end of 19th century, and several football clubs came into existence because of that. Royal Antwerp Football Club, based on the city of Antwerp, was the first football club to register with the national football association in 1895. Belgium's football clubs are categorized into leagues and divisions
1) First division
Officially known as Belgian Pro League is the top league for Belgium, having 16 clubs. It works on the system of promotion and relegation, where teams are transferred between divisions based on their performance by the end of each season in such a way that best performing teams are promoted to higher divisions and worse performing teams are demoted to lower divisions. All 16 clubs play each of their 15 opponents two times in a season, one at their home stadium and other one at that of their opponents' stadium, with a win earning them three points and a draw earning them one point. A season comprises 30 match days with eight matches daily played between July and March. Team rankings are decided by total points, total wins, and finally difference in number of away and home goals. Even if the teams still stand at the same level, then a test-match is played in two legs to decide the final order in the standings.
2) Second Division
It has been recently named EXQI League after a TV channel owned by the main sponsor of the league. A second division regular season comprising of 18 matches and 34 match days, is played between August and May, and is divided into three periods where the first period is of 10 match days, second one is of 12 match days and the final one is of final 12 match days. Rankings are reset before the season and the winner of the season is promoted to first division. Rankings are decided by total points, total wins, average number of goals, and finally by a play-off at a neutral venue. A team needs a professional license to play in this division
3) Third division
Popularly known as Belgium promotion, it has two leagues of 18 teams with 34 match days for each league, followed by third division play-off with seven teams and three match days. Each team has to play 34 matches in a season from August till May. A season is divided into three periods where first period is of 10 match days, second period is of 12 match days and final one is of final 12 match days. Each win earns them three points, one point for a draw and no points for a loss.
4) Promotion
It's a nationwide division in Belgium football divided into four league, with a regular season consisting of 30 match days for each league, and the winner of each league qualifying directly for the third division. Each league is further divided into three slices, which means that by the end of the season there will be 12 teams for play-offs which are played in three rounds.

Their national team

Belgium national football team was nicknamed red devils, primarily because their team's primary colors were red. They are known to play an intense physical game since technically skilled foreign players were not allowed to play with them due to legal restrictions. Because of such a physical nature of their football, they tend to produce very talented defensive players over the years, and very few of the Belgium attacking players have received international recognition.

Belgium has qualified for six consecutive World Cups from 1982 to 2002, in which they have reached the knockout phase five out of six. 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the first game of 1982 is one of their most famous victories, with an only goal by Erwin Vandenbergh. They achieved their best world cup run in 1986 world cup where they were placed fourth in the overall standing. They also have an Olympics gold medal and they were runner up in 1980 Euro cup.
