There are different types of corneal degenerations. The main nine forms of pathological corneal degenerations are as follows-

1. Fatty degeneration of cornea.

2. Hyaline degeneration of cornea.

3. Amyloid degeneration of cornea.

4. Calcific degeneration of cornea.

5. Salzmann's nodular degeneration of cornea.

6. Furrow degeneration of cornea.

7. Spheroid degeneration of cornea.

8. Pellucid marginal degeneration.

9. Terrien's marginal degeneration of cornea.

1. Fatty degeneration of cornea
- In it, there is yellowish deposits in the cornea. There is primary lipid keratopathy and secondary lipid keratopathy. Treatment of fatty degeneration of cornea is done by argon laser photocoagulation of new blood vessels.

2. Hyaline degeneration of cornea
- In hyaline degeneration of cornea, there is deposition of hyaline spherules in the superficial stroma. There is primary hyaline degeneration and also secondary hyaline degeneration. Keratoplasty is the treatment of choice.

3. Amyloid degeneration of cornea
- In it, there is deposition of amyloid material underneath the corneal epithelium.

4. Calcific degeneration of cornea
- There is deposition of calcium salts in Bowman's membrane. There is band shaped opacity in the interpalpebral zone. It begins at the periphery and gradually progress towards the centre.

5. Salzmann's nodular degeneration of cornea
- There is destruction of Bowman's membrane and adjacent stroma.

. Nodules within the corneal region.

. Impaired vision.

6. Furrow degeneration of cornea
- There is thinning of the periphery of cornea.

7. Spheroid degeneration of cornea
- This usually occurs in outdoor workers and due to excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays.

8. Pellucid marginal degeneration
- In it, there is marked astigmatism.

9. Terrien's marginal degeneration of cornea
- In it, there is non-ulcerative thinning of marginal cornea. It usually affects males after the age of forty. Dense yellowish white deposits are seen at the edge of cornea.
