Causes-

1. Varicella zoster virus.

2. Infection occurs in childhood.


Symptoms-

1. Frontal nerve is more frequently affected.

2. Ocular complications.

3. Lesions occur on one side of midline of head.

4. Fever.

5. Severe neuralgic pain along the course of affected nerve.

6. Skin of lids and other affected areas become red and oedematous followed by vesicles formation.

7. In due course of time vesicles are converted into pustules, which subsequently burst to become crusting ulcers.

8. When crusts are shed, permanent pitted scars are left.

9. Active eruptive phases last for about three weeks.

10. Anaesthesia of affected skin.

11. Conjunctivitis.

12. Petechial hemorrhages in conjunctiva.

13. Regional lymphadenopathy.

14. Zoster keratitis.

15. Punctuate epithelial keratitis.

16. Disciform keratitis.

17. Neuroparalytic ulceration.

18. Exposure keratitis.

19. Episcleritis and scleritits.

20. Iridocyclitits.

21. Acute retinal necrosis.

22. Secondary glaucoma.


Treatment-

1. Antiviral medicines.

2. Analgesics.

3. Steroids under doctor's guidance.

4. Antibiotics.

5. Lateral tarsorrhapy.

6. Keratoplasty.
