Child abuse on the rise? Its time to think

There was a time when coup d'etat by the military was a common occurrence in developing countries. Now Latin America seems to have outgrown that stage, but Asian and African countries still remain vulnerable to this malady.

Menacingly, child abuse is on the rise, and children, even infants, are not safe inside the precincts of their own homes. Paedophiles - they could be cousins, uncles, servants, neighbours, drivers - could be lurking outside the door and, perhaps, even inside people's homes.

The recent case of a three-year-old girl in Lucknow who was lured with toffees, then raped and killed by an "uncle" who lived next door, is one such example. The public outrage over the incident was so great that residents beat the accused to death even before the police could reach the scene. The problem of paedophilia is apparently bigger than it seems. The number of cases where minor girls, most of them below the age of eight, have been raped and killed by domestic servants and distant relatives has risen alarmingly.

According to a recent survey, 55.73 per cent boys and 44.27 per cent girls below five years of age face sexual abuse in Uttar Pradesh. Across India, every fifth child is a victim of sexual abuse.

A large number of child abuse cases - most of them not necessarily amounting to rape - go unreported due to social pressures and the accused roam free. The victim, however, ends up with permanent psychological scars that prevent him or her from leading a normal life.

While psychological disorders are undoubtedly responsible for such crimes, psychiatrists feel that the easy availability of pornographic material and the increased use of narcotics among men in the age group of 20 to 50, are also promoting sex-related crimes. Apart from the urgent need of making parents aware of the need to protect their child, there is also the need to make child abuse laws more stringent.

The existing laws are inadequate to work as a deterrent against such crimes. If the abuse falls short of physical rape, the maximum sentence is two years, while in the case of rape, it is seven years. The conviction rate in child abuse cases is abysmally low and the media focus is equally hazy, unless it happens to be a high profile case.

from One of Indian survey it is cleared that 70% Rapes are from Family member or relatives.
Which needs to stop or else now girls are afrading to go out side at evening after some day they will afraid to stay at home also.

All these happening just because of lack of education among them, they are living with the old tradition and if something wrong happened to them they feeling shy and hiding the facts and this increase the daring of that person who thinks that he can do with that girl what ever and no body is going to know about this and opposing him.

SO this is now very necessary to improve Education In girls so that thy can know there Demands and they can discuss all these with there family members

A proper sex education is the must to solve this problem. Children should report to their parents immediately if anything goes wrong so that many child abusive could be stopped at the earlier stage. As you said most of them are friends and relatives, hence parents should look after and pay attention to the children all the time if possible

This is truly a sad fact. :(

I think implementing High Moral Standard teachings be one good solution. Say 'no to pre-marital sex'. 'no to abortion'.. 'no to 'lawlessness'.

It is a good article dear.

The law should be strong to protect children and the culprits should be punished.

Government responses are falling short, both in protecting children from sexual abuse and treating victims. Many children are effectively mistreated a second time by traumatic medical examinations and by police and other authorities who do not want to hear or believe their accounts. Government efforts to tackle the problems including new legislation to protect children from sexual abuse will also fail unless protection mechanisms are properly implemented and the justice system reformed to ensure that abuse is reported and fully prosecuted. Educating the public especially policy makers about the true nature of abuse and prevention programmes should be focused. Teach all the girls the personal safety skills. The criminals who misuse the girl child for sexual purposes should be punished severely.
