In the early fifties a man Dr. Ward who belonged to London high society was arrested for living of earnings of prostitutes. this was smoke screen against the beliefs of Dr Ward
Dr. Stephan Ward was an osteopath who had the distinction of having treated Gandhi during his visit to India in 1943. But Dr. Ward is remembered for other things not connected with his profession. He was a socialite who propounded a bizarre theory of sex as a unifying force. He thus went about in the high society of London arranging sex parties and trysts between men and women of different races.
Dr. Ward may have perhaps escaped being caught, but in 1961 a scandal emerged around the War minster John Profuma. in England. Profuma was compromised as he had sex relations with a call girl named Christine Keeler, who in turn was seeing a commander of the Russian Navy on an assignment as the naval attaché in London.
Profuma had to resign his post as well as his parliament seat. An investigation of Keeler led the trail to Dr. Ward. He was arrested by the London police and charged with living of the money of prostitutes. Ward was committed to trial and lurid details of his activities emerged in court. Dr. Ward confessed that he liked young girls. It was established that Dr. Ward befriended poor young girls and enticed them into high society for sex and money. Dr. Ward who was a respected figure in London society felt terribly shamed. The Jury found him guilty, but before the verdict could be given Dr. Ward committed suicide by taking an over dose of sleeping pills. He died after 3 days and no sentence was pronounced. Now 50 years later we can see that Dr. Ward was a sensitive figure and also the charge that he lived of the money of prostitutes was not true. But all in all the name of Dr. Ward is an example of a good man gone astray in quest of the ultimate dream, total sex.
