Modern life style is doing everything fast, including eating. Fast eating, besides affecting health, causes so many side effects. Spending a few minutes more can assure many benefits.

         

Today life has become very fast. That has become the modern life style. Hectic schedules have created speed-eating habits. Rushing to the dining table in a hurry, eating in the standing position, gulping the lunch down in a few enormous bites, etc. have become common sights of eating habits. But do we ever think that eating slowly is important? A South Indian proverb assures that if you chew well and eat slowly you can live more than hundred years. Spending a few minutes more while eating can yield a lot of benefits.

Seven Benefits of Slow Eating

1) Slow Eating helps Control Weight

The most important benefit of eating slowly is control of weight. Obesity is causing more worries in the modern life. A growing number of studies confirm that just by eating slower, one consumes fewer calories, enough to lose 8-19 kilograms a year without doing or eating anything different. The main reason for that is, only after twenty minutes our brain gets the information from the stomach that it is full.

2) It helps Stop Eating in Time

When we eat fast, by the time our brain gets the news that it is full and eating should be stopped, our stomachs are already stuffed with food more than the need. If we eat slowly, we have enough time to know when we are satisfied and stop in time.

3) Fast Eating Consumes More Calories

In a study conducted by University of Rhode Island it was found out that fast eaters consumed 646 calories by eating a meal of pasta with sauce and cheese in nine minutes, but when the same meal was eaten slowly in twenty seven minutes they consumed only 579. Look at the difference.

4) The French Habit of Slow Eating

It has been proved that the French habit of slow eating keeps them thin despite their love for rich creams, cheese, cakes, butter and bread.

5) Slow Eating Gives a Greater Sense of Fullness

Eating slowly gives the sense of satisfaction. The researches conducted by the University of Rhode Island have proved that when the women ate fast, they were less satisfied and hungrier earlier than the slow eaters.

6) Eating slowly makes you appreciate what you eat

Eating slowly gives us enough time to enjoy eating and appreciate the appearance, smell and taste of food item. This gives a mental satisfaction which is good for our health.

7) Eating Slowly Helps Good Digestion

Good digestion is the ultimate aim of eating. Food chewed well by eating slowly is digested easily. The famous Tamil Poet Thiruvalluvar says that there is no medicine is needed for a good digested food.
