Honors were shared by both India and Australia on the first day of the first Test being played at Melbourne. India managed to pick up 6 Australian wickets, while the hosts managed to score 277 runs at the end of day one. For Australia Ricky Ponting came good with a half-century and so did Ed Cowan. For the visitors, fortunately, Zaheer Khan was in action picking up two wickets in as many balls.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first on a day that threatened rains right from the start. They finally made their presence felt two minutes before lunch. However, until then David Warner and Cowan had made a steady start to the Aussie innings. But when it looked as if both the openers would take the session away from India, Umesh Yadav struck twice to reduce the hosts to 46/2. He removed David Warner and Shaun Marsh.
However then, Ponting and Cowan set the tone for the Australian innings. They scored 113 runs for the third wicket. Importantly, Ponting got a half-century for himself to prove that he still deserves the place in the team. However, he proved to be the third victim of Yadav who undone him with a beauty of a delivery, for which Ponting didn't have any answer at all.

Captain Michael Clarke was set up nicely be Zaheer Khan to be bowled for 31. The very next delivery got rid of Michael Hussey. A ripper of a ball from Zaheer bit Hussey completely and the ball went safely to Dhoni. All players appealed in unison and importantly, the finger went up. However, it did look as though the ball did not touch the bat while going to Dhoni. The well set Cowan was also sent back shortly by Ashwin - again Dhoni taking the catch.

But Peter Siddle and Brad Haddin made sure that there was no loss of any further wickets. Both played out nearly 22 overs and denied India any wicket on the first day thereafter. Australia ended the day on 277/6.
