Vision is the vital gift of Mother Nature. It is with that precocious gift that we enjoy colors, hues, shades, light and darkness, and we are able to differentiate between each of them. The sense of sight brings us countless joys and blessings. But unfortunately, almost everyone in the fast modern world overworks their eyes, due to which several eye problems are on the increase everyday. Though eyes are considered to be the most important organ in our body, it is the most neglected one in the modern world controlled by computer and other media of vision. Eyes provide us sight, without which life would lose all its meaning. But at the same time, eyes are the most constantly exposed organ to the external environment.

Why so many eye problems?

To day wearing spectacles has become an inevitable lifestyle. Changed in lifestyle and food habits have caused increase in many diseases and eye problems. We don't pay heed to proper nourishment of eyes, rest and exercise. Using a computer most of the time, watching TV, lack of sleep, living in poor light conditions, etc. are causing much damage to the eyes.

Ayurveda for Eye Care

Ayurveda, the ancient medical system of India, has been giving much importance to eye care as eyes are the gateways of direct knowledge. Shalakya tantra is the Ayurveda branch of Ophthalmology, concerned with diseases of the eyes and head. Sushruta, one of the ancient experts of Ayurveda, describes about 72 eye diseases and their treatments. Ayurveda has prescribed certain norms to protect the eyes by using home-made formulas. Eye examination is an important part of Ayurvedic treatment.

Foods Suggested by Ayurveda for Good Eyes

1) Ayurveda suggests including a lot of fruits, vegetables and green leaves in daily diet. Pomegranates, green gram, banana stem, gooseberry, leaves of drumstick are some of the most recommended food items for general eye care.

2) Eating raw cabbage and carrots is good for the eyes.

3) Since Vitamin A is directly responsible for the strength and power of the eyes, foods that contain this vitamin are recommended.

Ten Ayurvedic Tips for Protection of Eyes

1) Use an umbrella and footwear while moving out of your home or avoid gong in excess heat and sunlight. Protect the eyes from dust, smoke and strong wind.

2) Taking oil bath at least once in a week keeps the body and eyes cool in good care. Avoid reading, writing or working with eyes in insufficient light, or for a very long time without break.

3) Proper rest for the eyes is a necessary part of our lifestyle. Actually in today's tight schedule one may find it hard to find time to give eyes proper rest.

4) Ayurveda advises sleeping in total darkness. In modern lifestyle many homes have a bedroom lamp or a streetlight directly forcing into the eyes while sleeping. They can be avoided.

5) If we sleep in a lighted room the photoreceptive cells of our retina would be active creating problems to the eyes.

6) Too much illumination through the dazzling lighting system used for decorations, etc, will harm the eyes.

7) Sharp lights emanating from the TV screen and computer screen damage the eyes very much. Today shortsightedness has become the problem of almost all because of this sharp light.

8) Every morning as soon as you upon wake fill your mouth with water and hold it for a few seconds with your eyes closed. Spit it out and repeat this exercise 2-3 times.

9) Trataka, the cleaning process of eyes, recommends safe and effective cleaning of eyes on a regular basis. Sitting in the meditative posture comfortably with an erect supine, look gazing at the flame of a candle or light kept at a distance without blinking the eyes. It may irritate the eyes and water may come from the eyes cleaning them.

10) Regular yogic exercises for the eyes are necessary today to maintain perfect eyesight. One simple exercise is moving and rotating the eyeball in the clockwise and anti-clockwise; first in the right and left directions and then upwards and downwards. Another one is rubbing the palms of both hands for about 30 seconds, then closing the eyes and gently placing the warm palms over the eyes.
