Remembering Sanjay Gandhi , a Man with a Vision

December 30, 2011  by: Madan G Singh  Points: 15   Category: Others    Views: 638

Sanjay Gandhi was a visionary, but he died young

Recently, I read a piece in the BJP paper Organizer which stated that the Congress party fostered dynastic politics. This is certainly amusing as one cannot understand what dynastic politics is.

It should not be forgotten that only dynasties have ruled nations. Look at the house of Windsor that has been the head of England from 1066 when William the conqueror landed in England. The Tsars who ruled Russia and the Gupta and Maurya dynasty followed by the Moghul dynasty were all rulers of India. They were all dynasties and history records that some of the dynasties ruled for centuries.

The problem is not of dynasties but of competence and that is what must matter. Let us examine two young men who were scions of the Nehru house hold and whether these men did any good for the nation. Now 2 decades after the death of the elder son of Indira Gandhi we can dispassionately examine the role of these two men.

Sanjay Gandhi

Sanjay Gandhi was a man accused of being an extra constitutional authority by his opponents. He was the younger son of Indira Gandhi and was a dynamic man. Perhaps that is what unnerved the opposition. He was the first man who realized the problem of India was population growth. The Indians at the time of independence were 33 crores and by the seventies had blown to 70 crores. Sanjay Gandhi was the first leader to realize that this bloated population would sound the death knell of India.

Accordingly he set about enforcing policies that would help restrict the population. He directed all state governments in his capacity of the Congress General Secretary to follow family planning targets and even in Muslim strong holds he enforced sterilization and vasectomy. If Sanjay Gandhi was an extra-constitutional authority it was a good thing, as he had the nerve of India in his grasp. Unfortunately he died in an air crash in 1981 and after him the urgency of enforcing population control went a begging. Can we not give him credit for that brief period when the Indian population balloon was punctured? Look at China, they have taken a leaf out of Sanjay's book and enforcing population control on the highest priority.

Sanjay was a visionary and had he lived longer the face of India would have been different
