Cause and symptoms of Rabies, a disease mainly caused by dog bite.

Introduction

Rabies is an acute encephalomyelitis. A disease that is transmitted to humans from animals and caused by a neutrophic virus. Although Rabies is 100% fatal it is 100% preventable through timely post exposure prophylaxis.

India contributes the highest number of Rabies. Death about 30,000 per year according to WHO/NICD sources.

Rabies virus

Mode of Transmission

1. People usually get the infection from bite of Rabid warm blooded mammals like dogs, cats, monkeys etc.

2. Wounds contaminated with infected saliva.

3. Consumption of raw milk.

4. Human to human spread- Theoretically there is human to human spread. No documented clinical evidence.

5. Rabies virus inactivated by dessication, in radiation heating at 60c

Incubation period

Incubation period may vary from a few days to several years, but typically 2 to 8 weeks. It varies depending upon the site of bite, severity of bite and the immune status of the bitten person.

During the incubation period, infected person does not carry a risk of rabies because the virus is not yet in the saliva. Only late in the disease after the rabies virus has reached the brain from site of wound and multiplied in the brain to cause encephalitis (inflammation of brain) does the virus move from the brain to the salivary glands and saliva.

Symptoms of Rabies

Symptoms can include fever, head ache, general tiredness, discomfort, numbness or pain at the site of bite, excitation, agitation, hyper salivation, insomnia, difficulty in swallowing, hydrophobia. Death usually occurs within days of the onset of symptoms if proper treatment is not taken.
