Mango has an ancient heritage

Mango has a rich heritage of more than 6,000 years. It is described in the ancient Vedic literatures. There are references about mango in Valmiki's Ramayana and Vyasa's Mahabharata. Mango was a favorite of kings and emperors of ancient India, where it had been a royal pride. Persians carried it to the Middle East while the Portuguese travellers brought it to Europe. The Moghul emperors had great devotion to this fruit and they cultivated it in large gardens.

According to Dr. Apratim Goel, a famous Indian dermatologist, "Mangoes are a rich source of beta carotene (vitamin A), which is a strong anti-oxidant. Apart from the rejuvenation effect, vitamin A also has dramatic effects on acne or pimples. Beta-carotene is the nutrient which is supposed to help you see in the dark, and it is crucial for your skin. It is converted by your body into vitamin A and is so important that it is often prescribed as a topical treatment that can be applied directly on to the skin for acne or pimple."

Hartwell states in his book titled, "Plants against Cancer," that the phenols in mangoes, such as quercetin, isoquercitrin, astragalin, fisetin, gallic acid and methylgallat, as well as the abundant enzymes, have healing and cancer-preventing properties.
