Winter comes with its cruel hands making many people's lives miserable. The weather in northern parts of the northern hemisphere makes people feel sad with the severe symptoms of Seasonally Affective Disorder (SAD). They may suffer from a simple feeling of stress to severe levels of depression which may lead them even to suicidal tendencies.

Winter blue sufferers in cold countries

Experts say that winter blues are prevalent in the U.S. ranging from 1.4 % in Florida to 9.7 % in New Hampshire, affecting most of the people in northeast and northwest states. In the UK and in northern parts of Europe, it is estimated to affect around 7% of people.

Dr. Rosenthal, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical School, Rockville, Maryland, says that around 14 percent of the adult US population suffers from a lesser form of winter blues. Further, he says that though it affects people all over the world seasonally, it is found to be prevalent in the US, UK, and Scandinavia.

Light therapy to protect from winter blues

1) Light therapy with exposure to bright lights is a way to treat seasonal affective disorders or winter blues. It is a device called a light therapy box that gives off bright light which activates the brain chemicals.

2) White fluorescent lights behind a plastic diffusing screen which filter out ultraviolet rays are used to create an artificial daylight effect. According to Dr. Rosenthal, although the amount of light varies from person to person, the light therapy is beneficial to 60 % to 80% of those who suffer from winter blues.

3) The light box used in light therapy emits a strong light that helps people overcome the winter blue effects. It is stronger than regular incandescent lighting systems which have been discovered causing depression in people during the winter.

4) Light therapy can take away the SAD effects caused by winter weather and change ones mood. It can reset an agreeable sleep cycle, relieving the symptoms.

Light therapy can be an effective solution for winter blues if it is combined with other treatments with the guidance of medical practitioners.
