About Fort St. George





St. George was the first fortress of the British in India. It was founded at Chennai in 1639. Today Chennai grew around this fort.

East India Company first licensed trading started in the city of Surat. Soon the
company decided to enter into this spice trade for which it was necessary to have a port nearer to the Malacan Straits. There was a banana grove owned by a farmer called Madrasan.

Official grant for the land was given by Venkatagiri Nayak, the deputy of the Raja of Chandragiri. This was purchased and the construction of a harbor and fort began. the day on which the construction work at the fort was completed coincided with St Geroges day. So this fort was given the of Fort St. George.

Actually the St. George was the patron saint of British. The fort is surrounded by walls that are 6 meters high.

Soon this place became the heart of merchant activity and developed into a new settlement area called George Town. This expanded and became Madras or present day Chennai.

The Museum inside has weapons,coins,Uniforms and other artifacts from Britain, France and India.These all are belonging to the British period.

This was once the residence of Robert Clive. It was also known as Admiralty House. It is the Symbol of Chennai.
