Reports say that there is a considerable increase in women of Asian countries attending Martial Arts Schools. Does it show that women are rising up with more power or does it reflect the increase of social evils against women?

Women in the past have been considered secondary to male in everything and were not even allowed to go to schools. Education and job had been only masculine. Women had to remain arrested in their houses, doing cooking and other household works. This has been the condition generally in Asia until recently. But today, things have changed. Women have to come out, get education, go to work and stand on their own legs for survival.

Increase in Asian women learning martial arts

There is definitely a very high percentage of women in Asia practicing martial arts, especially in China, Japan and India. Most of them learn these arts for self-protection, though some of them practice them for maintaining their body’s health condition.

1) Times Of India says that the ratio of women to men learning karate was 10% to 90% years ago, but today camps and classes all over the main cities in India have caused 45% to 50% increase in women opting to learn karate or such martial art.

2) Women attending martial schools prefer to learn Karate, Kung Fu, Tae kwon do, judo, Shaolin Kempo and kendo. They are probably the most popular all over the Asian countries.

3) There is also considerable increase in women learning martial arts because of the increase in women going into law enforcement jobs and military. The number of women attending other jobs is also increasing in Asian countries and this make self protection more essential wherever they go.

4) Modern women attend martial art schools to keep themselves fit and healthy. They are convinced that martial arts will help their prospects better by provide a mind-body bonding through these arts.

Why do more Asian women learn martial arts today?

1) Traditionally, women in Asian countries were not moving outside and remained at home throughout the day. The role and status of women have changed greatly, forcing women to come out and take part in the social, political and cultural changes that have taken place in the 20th century as a consequence of globalization. This has changed the condition of women all over the world, particularly the traditional set ups in Asian countries.

2) Imperialism has been thrown down and ideals and women’s role in society have also changed. Jobs were considered masculine and women were supposed to remain at home giving birth to children, feeding them and looking after the family. But to day things have changed and women have to jump out of their cocoons and involve themselves in all the needs of the society. This has challenged their personal security. Hence, more women attend martial arts today.

Today women have to protect themselves

1) Old Chivalry of Europe or Rakshabandan of Indian culture for protecting the weaker sex have become a think of the past and females today have to protect themselves in all possible ways. At home or out of home they face predators on all sides, ready to victimize them in every possible way.

2) Crimes against women are increasing every day. Statistics reveal that rape is the fastest growing violent crime all over the world today. It is also the most under-reported or never-reported crime of modern times. Weaker sex becomes victims of all kinds of abuses in the society.

3) Modern world is losing all moral values. Industrialization combined with globalization has given way to the brutality of man reach it’s most vicious and bloody peak.

4) Late night works have become very common in cities and women who have to expect vulnerable situations of abuses when they work late hours.

5) Reports state that women who could resist and fight back only could manage such crime situations and approximately 86% of modern women could escape attempted sexual assaults by defending themselves. This makes it clear about the necessity of learning self-protective techniques such as martial arts.

Good article on the whole. I think, one reason why every woman ought to learn martial arts is to protect themselves. With the increasing rates of crimes against women in metros and cities all over the world, techniques of self defence like martial arts must be given top priority with respect to education of women.
