The First Evangelists of the Gospel paulose vargheseRanked #7 in Societies, Religion & Culture Gospel means “Good News”. According to the gospels, Good News was first spread by the shepherds. Luke, who gives more importance to spreading the good news of Jesus, narrates how the poor shepherds could proclaim the message. They were the first evangelists of the Gospel.

The Greek word “euangelizo” means both “good news” and “preaching good news”. The word “gospel” also means “good news”. An evangelist conveys the “good news about the Redeemer”. Four gospels in the Bible speak about Jesus, the human personality of the second person of the Holy Trinity, who is believed to be born as man to redeem humanity from the bonds of sin.

All the four gospels convey the good news about Jesus Christ. They say that God’s promise to the ancestors of the Israelites was realized through the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem. Gospels do the work of introducing Jesus to others. Matthew and Luke narrate the story of the birth of Jesus. They describe how the message of “good news” was given to others. Matthew narrates the message got by the magi. Luke tells about the shepherds.

The reaction of the magi who got the message

The magi came to know about the birth of Jesus through their studies on the appearance of a new star. They came in search of the child following the star that guided them. They lost the sight of the star on the way and had to seek the help of the political and social leaders of the place. They expected that those people might have the knowledge about the child. They went straight to the king of the country and enquired about the birth of the king of Jews. “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him.’”. (Matthew 2: 1-2 Bible RSV) King Herod immediately called the learned men of his court and enquired about the matter. The chief priests and scribes could find some answer from the scriptures.

The Israelites had been waiting for Messiah for a long time. All people of Palestine, including King Herod, were aware that a redeemer would be born in the clan of their great king David. The query from the magi should have delighted them since all of them had been waiting for it. The good news about their redeemer reached them through an unexpected source which reminded them of the promise of God through the scriptures. But their reaction was quite different. When King Herod heard about the birth of a baby who was supposed to be the expected Messiah, he was much disturbed. The politicians of Judea were also disturbed. Even after hearing the good news about the birth of the expected Messiah, they plan only to kill the child. They decide to overcome the prophetical anticipations through their cunning politics. The magi who went and saw the child reacted in a different way by changing their way.

The shepherds become the first evangelists of the gospel

The shepherds were watching over the sheep. Through an Angel, the shepherds heard the good news of great joy. They discussed about the message of the Angel. Although they were frightened in the beginning, they believed what was told to them and were happy to meet the baby. “And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.” (Luke 2:20)

The shepherds hurried to the place of birth. They saw the baby with Mary and Joseph. They found the child wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger, as they were informed by the angel. They could not remain idle, after meeting the divine child. They glorified and praised God. They went around everywhere, telling about what they had seen and experienced. People were amazed at the news told to them. The shepherds became the first evangelists of the gospel.

God sends the message of good news to all. The poor and humble accept it easily. The high-level people hesitate or reject the good news. People who are obsessed with selfishness act against the good news, trying to suppress it.
