Useful tips on goal setting

In this article, I have given important tips on goal setting. I have also expalined what is a goal setting, why you need to set goals, how to set goals for yourself, give your goals time duration, arrange goal list on priority, setting meaningful and interesting goal, rewarding oneself, monitoring one's activity plan etc.


Introduction of goal setting
Very often you find people in and around you who opine that their present life is leading them no where. Such people are so busy in their life that they forget some basic things in their lives. To tell you the truth, a life without any specific goal is like a ship without a rudder. Just imagine about a situation when to boarded a train without knowing where your final destination would be. Of course, it will add to your confusion and you may lose your way. Hence, each one of you need to have certain goals in your life so that it becomes easier for you to sail smoothly in the journey of your life. For this, you need to think, analyze and set goals for yourself on the long term or short term basis as the case may be.

What is goal setting?
There are many definitions of goal setting available on the net and encyclopedias. But to put it in simple words, it is a process which could lead you to your final destination in the future. Further, it also motivates, influences and inspires you to reach your aim in the future in the stipulated time duration.

Why you need to set goals?
Goal setting is a great tool which could be used by individuals, sports person, entrepreneurs and managers to reach their objectives effectively. It helps you to get organized and motivates your activities to find out how well you are moving to your end target. It simply motivates and inspires you to perform better in the future. In fact, it is the perfect yardstick to measure your output and act accordingly for better results.

How to set goals for yourself?
Before you set goals for yourself, you need to understand what you want to achieve in the future. After selecting your specific aims, you need to give it a time period in which you are going to achieve your aims. Depending on the situation, it could be a long term or a short term goal as the case may be. However, you need to keep the following factors in mind before you set goals for yourself at the personal level.

Analyze your future
First, you need to analyze thoroughly and find out what you want to accomplish in the future. Write down all your goals in a piece of paper and then group your goals under categories. This way you will be able to keep the list shorter and avoid confusion. Now, you are ready with the specific goals which you need to achieve in the future.

Give it a time duration
After selecting your specific goals, its time for you to tag those goals with particular time duration. In this way, you will be sure how to proceed aptly to meet those time deadline. Your goals could be a long term or a short term one as the case may be. You can set time periods for your goals ranging from years, months, weeks, days and even hours.

Arrange the list on priority
Next, you need to consider your goals on the basis of its priority. Certainly, those goals which are important and based on short time periods should be given much importance. Moreover, you can set a priority list of goals which will help you to focus on those goals which need your immediate attention.

Set meaningful and interesting goals
You need to set for yourself meaningful and interesting goals which will not only motivate you to achieve those but also help you to feel good morally. Having too many goals that are irrelevant or not going to help your cause is simply equivalent to having no goals at all. Hence, you need to keep this factor in mind while preparing goals for yourself.

Monitor yourself periodically
While you are on your way of achieving your goals, you need to monitor yourself periodically. It will be able to find your present position and give you an idea if you are proceeding in the right direction. Besides, if you find yourself to be heading nowhere then you can revise your approach and make timely adjustments so that are just back into the right track.

Make an activity plan
Very often, you may get lost on your way thinking about the positive outcomes of your goals. Hence, you need to make an activity plan where you need to write down your steps to your ultimate goal. This comes in handy specially when your goal is big and demands a lot of thought in your process. Cross out a particular step when you get over it regularly until you reach your final goal. This will also help you to remain focused on your specific goal.

Slog for your goal
Quite often, you may lose your way and forget the importance of sticking around with your goals. You need to be determined and focused in your approach throughout until you reach your goal. Hence, it is important to remind yourself regularly about your goal and slog hard for it. If you could stick around your goals until you achieve you will definitely get success in your attempt.

Involve others
It is great to have a goal and persist with it but it is even better if you have someone who could remind you about your goals. You could involve your family members and take their advice because they might be better than you at this. The most important thing is that when you discuss your goals with others they have their suggestions too on the matter. This will help you to remain positive in your approach and who knows you might get the necessary inspiration when others think on your behalf.

Reward yourself
This has its own relevance. After you achieve a part of your long term goal celebrate it and reward yourself. When you reward yourself you will get further determined to work harder towards your goal. This is a proven method and experts time and again always ask people to use it on a regular basis. Hence, encourage yourself by giving yourself timely rewards which will act like a blessing in the long run.

Be prepared for failures
It is common that when you are on your way to achieve your long term goals you might come across failures. But there is nothing to worry about. Take it in a positive spirit and move ahead by making some adjustments here and there. Next time you will find yourself doing much better than what you did before. Human beings have a tendency to learn from their mistakes and you too is not an exception to this rule. Hence, make your every single failure as the yardstick of your success. What more!
