Democracy is the form of government which ensures the rule by the people. But in this scenario a lot of challenges are put forward in front of democracy. This article also tells us about the challenges before the democracy

Democracy is not simply a form of government but it is the government by the people, for the people and of the people. Democratic idea is not a new one but from the olden days itself we can trace its way. Democracy is a way of life than a form of government. The power is in the hands of people .They can be exercised both directly and indirectly. The democratic rule involves bringing down the basic principles of democracy i.e. equality and freedom to all the people in our country irrespective of their caste, creed, gender, rich or poor etc.

Most of the countries are now experiencing democratic rule. Democracies bring an accountable, responsive and legitimate form of government. The people have right to choose, when chosen people have the control over the government, whenever necessary they are able to participate in the decision making.
A challenge is not simply a problem. Those difficulties which can be overcome are known as a challenge. The challenges before a democracy can be grouped as foundational challenge, challenge of expansion and challenge of deepening.

Now we can take a look at these challenges in detail.
1.The foundational challenge: The foundational challenge is also known as the challenge of establishment. This is the challenge which every democracy is now facing or has faced earlier. The foundational challenge involves the transition or change to democracy from any other form of government. This involves keeping the military away from the government.

2.The challenge of expansion: After the transition to democracy the government has to apply the basic principles of democracy to its entire people, ensuring the discrimination in minority community and ensuring decentralization i.e. ensuring greater power to local self government.

3.The challenge of deepening: This is a challenge faced by democracy in one form or the other. This involves strengthening of the democratic institutions and practices of democracy.

The democratic rule will be the most effective form of government if these problems or challenges are reformed.
