this is an article that gives you an idea about the medication used for "male pattern baldness" and its various side effects..

General Information:
Propecia, medically known as ‘androgenetic alopecia’, is a drug which is prescribed to patients showing male pattern baldness. It is also known as finasteride, which is a white crystalline powder soluble in lower alcohol solvents but completely insoluble in water.
Propecia is a great medication for stopping hair loss. It reduces the amount of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in the body of the patient, hence reducing the amount of hair loss. This medication is used mainly for hair loss on top of the head and in front of the head.
Though this medicine helps in curing male pattern baldness to a great extent, it is however not effective in preventing hair loss of hair growing near the temples. This medicine is not licensed to be used for small children and women too. Stopping this medication would return hair loss to the patient within a year of stopping it.
Doses of this medicine may cause side effects like decreased libido, decreased ejaculate amount, or impotence. This medication is highly negatively effective for pregnant women and thus causes severe damage to the fetus. People who suffer from allergies, liver disease, etc. must only take doses of ‘propecia’ only after being advised to do so by their health provider.

Conditions Treated:
Propecia is used mainly for the treatment of male pattern baldness in Men only. DHT is the main reason for male pattern baldness. Propecia helps in decreasing DHT’s amount in an individual's body by not allowing the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Thus this way it prevents male pattern baldness.
This medicine can mainly be used for hair loss on top of the head and in front of the head. However it does not help in preventing hair loss for hair near the temples. Use of this medicine is to be continued for three months or more on a daily basis, before achieving positive results. Propecia, though primarily used for treatment of hair loss, also cures acne to a certain extent.
Propecia or Finasteride, belongs to ‘ 5-alpha reductase inhibitors’ medicine group. However pregnant women must not take this medication at all. They must not even touch broken tablets of this medicine, this way they can prevent harm to the fetus. People suffering from allergies, liver disease, etc., Must only consume this medicine if it has been prescribed to them by their doctors. And people already taking this medicine must only stop consuming it with prior consultation with their doctor.

How To Use:
For male pattern baldness, the recommended dose of propecia is 1mg. It is to be taken on a daily basis at the same time everyday. There are several things that can affect the doses of this medication; body weight, extra medical conditions, and separate medication, being some of them. One must strictly abide by their doctor's recommendations in taking this medicine doses.

In case of missing a dose of this medication one must take it as early as possible, thus maintaining continued with their regular schedule. If it is already time for the next dose, then it is better to continue with the latter than the former to maintain the scheduled routine. Taking double doses to make up for the missed one is not at all advisable.
One must not give anyone else this medication even if the same symptoms as theirs is present in them. Taking this medicine may severely harm people to whom it is not prescribed.
Propecia must be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children.
Disposal of this medication must not be into household disposal bins, sinks, or wastewater drains. This way one can maintain the security of the house. And therefore prevent harm to people staying there.

Side Effects:
Everyone taking this medication does not necessarily suffer from side effects. However side effects do exist.
Not so common side effects are:
• Back pain
• Decreased ejaculate amount
• Abdominal pain
• Reduced sexual interest
• Erectile dysfunction
• Breast enlargement
• Skin rash
• Swelling of lips
It is very harmful for pregnant women to take this medication. Doing so may also cause genital abnormalities in male babies. Women who are pregnant or are going to become pregnant must not at all handle broken or crushed tablets of propecia. This will otherwise be absorbed through their ski causing damage to the fetus. Breast tenderness is also one of the side effects in women.

Another one of the side effects is decreased ejaculate amount. People taking this medication have shown a considerable decrease in their ejaculate amount. And have also suffered from testis pain. At times impotence was a result from taking this medication.
Children are not to take this medication. People suffering from liver dysfunction, or if taking different medication, or suffering from other medical problems, must only consume this medicine if it has been prescribed to them by their health professionals.
