Ten health Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric is produced from the dried and processed rhizomes (roots) of the plant Curcuma longa. The plant is native to India and Indonesia but India (state of Andhra Pradesh) is the largest turmeric producer in the world. Curcumin, the main chemical substance of turmeric, is responsible for the intense yellow color of the spice due to which it is also known as “Indian Saffron”. Turmeric is in use for more than 5000 years in traditional medicine both in India as well as China. It is considered to be a highly valuable Ayurvedic medicine owing to its health benefits. It contains proven antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-septic and many more medicinal properties. Turmeric is considered as a safe spice but prolong use of high doses may cause some minor problems. Some of the medicinal conditions for which turmeric has been proven useful are:

Arthritis: Due to its anti-inflammatory activity turmeric has been proven useful for the treatment of arthritis and other inflammatory join pain diseases. A recent study from Italy has shown that arthritic patients treated with turmeric formulations showed an improvement of 58% in reported pain and stiffness and better physical functioning. A very well-known health benefit of turmeric is its use as a natural analgesic.

Cancer: Property to reduce the production of free radicals and the ability to work as an antioxidant are the qualities of turmeric which make it a valuable anti-cancer tool. Recent researches in the area of colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, leukemia and multiple myeloma have vouched for the anti-cancer activities of this spice. It not only inhibits the production of new cancer cells but also prevents metastasis (spread of cancer) of already existing cells. It inhibits neo-angiogenesis (production of new blood vessels to supply nutrients to the cancer mass).

Cystic Fibrosis: Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease caused by the production of a faulty protein and mainly affects lungs and also pancreas, liver and intestine. The characteristic feature of this disease is the excessive secretion of mucus in the lung cavity which results in difficult in breathing. Recent studies have shown that use of turmeric has reduced the severity of the disease by inhibiting the accumulation of mucus. It has also shown a protective effect towards pancreas which is also affected by the disease.

Alzheimer’s disease: Lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease in India have been attributed to the regular use of turmeric in Indian kitchen. Recent reports from scientist all over the world have shown positive results and improvement in patients treated with turmeric formulations compared to the un-treated controls.

Cardiovascular disorders: Turmeric prevents the formation of blood clots and prevents the deposition of cholesterol on the blood vessel walls. Due to its anti-oxidant capacity it prevents the oxidation of LDL (harmful form of cholesterol) and thus prevents its deposition on the artery walls. Turmeric reduces the build-up of platelets along the walls of the blood vessels and reduces the chances of clot formation in turn reducing the chances of a capillary blockage and stroke.

Liver Diseases: Turmeric stimulates the formation of bile and helps in detoxification process. It protects liver from the harmful effects of toxic substances such as alcohol. It is said to shrink engorged liver ducts and thus proves to be useful in the treatment of cirrhosis, hepatitis and jaundice.

Digestive disorders: Another benefit of turmeric is its use as a digestive aid. Turmeric is used to improve digestion, reduce gas and bloating from the time unknown. It improves body’s ability to digest fest by stimulating the bile production in the liver. Anti-inflammatory activity of curcumin has been proven very useful in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel disease and also protect from intestinal ulcers.

Anti-septic and Anti-bacterial: Due to its anti-septic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties turmeric is used as a natural external antibiotic. It can be directly applied on the wound where its helps in preventing bacterial infections. It also speeds up wound healing by remodeling of damaged skin.

Pre-mature aging and skin lightning: Aging is a natural process. Production of free radicals cause damaging of the tissues (skin and other) and cause dullness and folding. Being an antioxidant curcumin not only reduces the production of free radicals in the skin but also fights with the already existing ones. It has been used in the cosmetic industry for centuries as a skin lighting agent. It is also anti-allergic.

Menstrual problems of woman: Being antispasmodic and analgesic, turmeric is known to reduce, if not completely eliminate, the digestive and menstrual cramping.

Turmeric is very useful for us in many ways. We can't see a single kitchen without turmeric powder. It is a taste maker. We use turmeric powder for making almost all the dishes. Turmeric is very healthy for our body. That is the main reason why we use turmeric for making dishes. t has the special power to prevent us from some serious diseases. Nature has given this herb as a gift for us. It can remove poison from vegetables. So we always put some vegetables like cauliflower and beans in turmeric water before cooking. Sometimes we use turmeric to get good and beautiful colour for dishes. We make variety of rices like lemon rice, tamarind rice, fried rice, vegetable rice etc. by adding turmeric powder. It is for getting good appearance.

Ladies and children apply turmeric in their face for removing pimples. Applying turmeric daily will give beautiful colour to our body. Applying turmeric full of our body before taking bath is very essential after delivery. There may be some reason related to health behind this process.
