Yamaha will be the first company from across the border to have a two wheeler plant in Tamil Nadu.

The southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu is a home to many car manufacturing companies. However, there is a scarcity of two wheeler auto companies having their manufacturing plants there. TVS and Royal Enfield are the two companies with their plants in Tamil Nadu.
But now, with the entry of Yamaha, the number of two wheeler plants has gone up to three. The company will have a plant on the outskirts of Chennai. India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd has signed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Tamil Nadu government. The MoU approved the operation as well as the construction of a new plant for two wheeler production in the state.

The company currently has India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. (IYM) at Surajpur (in the state of Uttar Pradesh) and in Haryana in Faridabad. This (the new plant) was needed for meeting the growing demand for two wheelers for the Indian market. The new plant will occupy an area of 4, 40,000 square meter of area, which will be in the industrial park in Vallam Vadagal that is on the outskirts on the capital city of Chennai.

Out of the 4, 40,000 sq m area, the construction for 1, 14,000 sq m, which is reserved for the factory facility is scheduled to start from the month of September this year. The beginning of the operations of the plant is likely to start in early 2014.

The company plans to provide occupation to as many as 1800 people in the entire factory. Apart from that the company is also planning to have a production of at least 4, 00,000 units. Yamaha plans on having an increase in the production up to 1.8 million units per year. The company plans to reach these figures until the year 2018. The employment will also likely increase up to 6500.

Yamaha is planning to invest approximately Rs. 1500 crores in the next five year period. The Yamaha factory will be the first of its kind to have a vendor park in the vicinity, which will bring collectively the production operations.
