Acute Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis is caused by the inflammation of the bronchial tubes of lungs by virus or bacteria. Usually acute bronchitis is caused by virus.

Causes -

1. Viral causes - causative micro-organism is usually rhinovirus.

2. Bacterial causes - Mycoplasma pneumoniae, haemophilus influenzae, streptococcus pneumoniae.


Symptoms -

1. Dry cough, excess sputum production.

2. Wheezing.

3. Breath sound intensity is low.

4. Breathlessness, shortness of breath.

5. Dysponea spells wakes the patient at night.

6. Chest x-ray show consolidation of infected area of lungs.

7. Excess mucosal secretion in respiratory tract which blocks airways.


Investigations-

1. WBC count - white blood cell count elevated.

2. Neutrophils- increased.

3. Eosinophils increased.

4. Chest X-ray.

5. Microscopic examination of sputum.


Treatment-

1. Treatment of acute bronchitis depends upon the cause. For bacterial causes, that is acute bronchitis caused by bacteria, give antibiotics, but not for acute bronchitis caused by virus. Viral bronchitis is self-limiting disease.

2. Rest, smoking cessation in smokers.

3. Maintain hygiene.
