Addisonian Pernicious Anemia

Addisonian pernicious anemia is megaloblastic macrocytic anemia caused due to failure of secretion of intrinsic factor by stomach.

         

Addisonian pernicious anemia is megaloblastic macrocytic anemia caused due to failure of secretion of intrinsic factor by stomach which leads to deficient absorption of vitamin B12 and hence vitamin B12 deficiency.

Causes -

1. Autoimmune gastric atrophy.

2. Occurs more in blood group A people. Females are affected more by addisonian pernicious anemia.


Symptoms -

1. It usually occurs in patient aged above forty five years.

2. Patient has history of autoimmune diseases in past. Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency affect nervous system and formation of red and white blood cells.


Investigations-

1. Serum vitamin B12.

2. Blood test.

3. TLC, WBC, RBC count.

4. Bone marrow examination.

5. Vitamin B12 absorption test.

6. Reticulocyte count.

7. Serum gastrin level.


Treatment -

Treatment of addisonian pernicious anemia involves following therapies under doctor’s supervision-

1. Vitamin B12 therapy.

2. Iron therapy in case of associated iron deficiency along with vitamin B12 deficiency.

3. In case of severe neurologic system symptoms, appropriate treatment should be given through medication to treat the symptoms.
