Natural painkillers

In this article I have tried to summarize ten different natural ways to be healthy and deal with pain.


Natural painkillers:

Everyone of us is familiar with the word pain. We all have experienced it at some part or other of our life and are familiar with the uncomfortable feeling. The origin of word pain is unclear but it could have been derived from Old French word “peine” which means pains or from Latin word “poena” or Greek word “poine” which means punishment or penalty or price paid. Pain brings with it feelings of restlessness, depression, anxiety, decreased immunity and hinders in the normal functioning of a person.

Pain is an interplay of neurotransmitters that is triggered at the site of origin and the message is conveyed to brain. Pain is helpful in diagnosing problems and is also a mechanism which guides our body to protect itself from harmful situations and avoid them in future for e.g. burning a finger, cutting a finger, using antiseptic on wounds etc. Perhaps that is why the saying goes “No pain no gain”. It has become a common practice to consume pain killers like aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen to deal with it. There are also a variety of natural drug free painkillers available and used in the folk medicine to relieve pain like fish oil, olives, cherries, curcumin etc. However nature has equipped us well to deal with mild pain (physical and psychological) and live a happy and stress free life. Some of the natural methods to relieve mild pain are:


We learn to laugh before we even learn to speak. It is a pity that as we grow old we grow more serious and finds it childish to laugh. Laughing is the best medicine. Scientists have shown that parts of the limbic system, which is involved in emotions and human survival, are involved in laughter. Laughter releases endorphins (happiness hormone) in the brain and reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. Endorphins are known to have pain relieving effects. Laughter is also known to increase the blood flow by dilating the blood vessels, increases the number of antibody producing cells and also improves T-cells functions thus strengthening the body’s immune system.

Listening to music:

Music is food for soul. Healing powers of music are very well known for over centuries. Today Music is used as therapy for Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Stroke, Depression and anxiety etc. Scientifically music is known to promote secretion of endorphins in the brain which are responsible for providing relief from acute and chronic physical and psychological pain. Research has shown that listening to soothing music for 30 minutes has the same effect as the muscle relaxer pill known as Valium. Music therapy in an important part of pain management these days as music is an effective pain reliever, both alone as well as in conjugation with other pain relieving agents.

Eating favorite food:

Eat healthy stay healthy. It is an age old saying and is very true too. Mother Nature has provided us with a variety of fruits and vegetables which are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory chemicals, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals and so on. Eating favorite food also makes one happy, stress free and relaxed. Foods like chocolate, Ice cream, strawberries or spicy food causes the release of endorphins in the brain. Endorphins increase the body’s threshold for pain and are very much like morphine. These food items slow down the aging process as well as reduce the inflammation: the root cause of most pains.

Love and happiness:

Romantically love is a feeling which comes straight from the heart. Scientifically speaking, it is an inter-play between a variety of hormones which makes us feel good, relaxed, stress free, positive, full of energy, strong and alive. When we are in love or feel loved our brain secretes endorphins, serotonin, oxytocin, dopamine and many other hormones and neurotransmitters. These are natural stress busters and pain killers which provide a feeling of overall well-being and happiness. These chemicals, especially endorphins are what makes us come back to love again and again. This is the reason why love is good for health and is addictive in nature. So fall in love and then rise in it.

Organize nature trips:

We all come from Nature and spending time there and listening to nature’s music (singing of birds, sound of waterfall, looking at mountains and rivers, sound of rain, walk in the forest, feeling of wind blowing in one’s hairs etc.) gives us a feeling of calmness and peace. This is the moment when our brain releases the happiness hormones and neurotransmitters which relaxes our muscles, calm down our body’s system and provide us with a feeling of peace. Exposure to sunlight is also known to release endorphins in the brain. That is why it feels great to be close to Mother Nature because you can find your peace and happiness.


Exercise is good for health. It keeps one fit and prevents diseases such as heart problems, blood pressure, diabetes etc. Exercise not only improves our physical health but also is a great stress buster. People who exercise regularly feel good about themselves and have a higher self-esteem. During exercise brain releases endorphins which give a euphoric feeling (Runners high) which is known to ease anxiety, reduce stress, improves mood, increase vigor, decreases fatigue and depression. Endorphins are natural tranquilizers and are helpful in pain management. Just ten minutes of daily moderate exercise is good enough to obtain the health benefits and emotional comfort.


Message is generally defined as pressing and rubbing the skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments by using fingers, hands, forearms and sometimes elbows and feet. Massage type may vary from light stroking to deep tissue message. It is a scientific fact that message can trigger the release of endorphins, oxytocin and serotonin in brain which raises the threshold for pain and provides a feeling of wellness, peace and happiness. Patients suffering from chronic conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia and migraines are benefited from message therapy as it helps in reducing pain, anxiety and depression and encourages relaxation which promotes and also restores normal sleep patterns.


It has been shown that lack of sleep is linked to obesity, cancer, heart problems and impaired immune response. Sleep is a very mysterious part of our lives and has healing powers. During sleep our brain is active and processes information and releases a lot of chemicals and neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine and histamine. Patients suffering with pain often also suffer from sleep disorders as they have disturbed sleep patterns due to pain. However it is important to sleep as otherwise the intensity of pain can increase and also lack of sleep can give rise to other complications. Therefore it is advisable for people to use different sleep aids like developing habits that induce sleep, creating a sleep promoting environment in bedrooms and using psychological techniques which will help to induce better and peaceful sleep.

Yoga and meditation:

Yoga is an ancient system developed in India which deals with the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional health of an individual. Recently the benefits of yoga and meditation are documented in pain management. Different Yoga positions and exercises (asana) are known to have a calming effect of on our body. They are known to relax muscles, improve breathing, reduce anxiety and stress and promoted positive mood. University of Massachusetts has founded a Stress reduction and Relaxation program for chronic pain patients, of which combination of Yoga and meditation is an integral and successful part.

Develop hobbies:

Hobbies can work as distracting therapy by causing the mind to get diverted for some time from pain to other interesting things at hand. This is only a short time solution but is helpful in alleviating pain. Brain gets indulged in different activities and releases certain feel good chemicals which work under these situations and distract the concentration of a person from pain to pleasure.

Oh this is a lovely article. One such, that I have read after a long long time. Indeed it has refreshed me. However, of all the things you suggested here, I liked the last one. Keeping oneself busy is the best medicine, I believe. People who retire after the age of 58 and do nothing in life thereafter, start to complain of various kinds of aches in their body. But those who are active even at that age, are healthy.

Thanks a lot Abhijit. I am very happy that you liked my article and took some time out to comment on it. I strongly believe that nature has the cure for most of the things. Due to progress of the mankind we have perhaps invented new ways to abuse our bodies and mind and this is where we have to again invent new ways and medicines to treat ourselves. But no matter what we always turn back to nature to look for answers. It is like Mother Nature knew it all and we are like naughty children turning back to her for help.

I also agree with you that if we develop new hobbies or find out ways to use our time more productively and constructively rather than to sit idle then we can solve a lot of problems and not only pain. It is very important to keep oneself busy and what is a better way to do this than to do what you really love to. After retirement people have a lot of time at hand and they do not know what to do. All their lives they were working and had a kind of schedule for themselves but suddenly they are out of job with lots of time and nothing to do. People at this stage believe that they are old and confine themselves in home with grandchildren or with temples and some stick to TV. This is not healthy and gives rise to lot of complication both physical and mental. I would suggest we all should have hobbies or other interest which can keep us going and active.

Garlic is one and vital herb which helps us to reduce our many types of pain in natural way. If raw garlic can be taken before our meal, it would be more effective. But if anyone is having any physical constraints, restrictions from their medical practitioners or allergies etc., they should not take Garlic without consulting to their doctor.
