Health benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Research shows that Omega 3 fatty acids ,normally found in Fish , protects their heart and other health conditions. This is what led the health experts to study and research the benefits it has on humans.


A lot has been written and disussed about this particular nutrient which is known to have a whole lot of health benefits , producing abundant health and preventing some degenerative diseases. This is what led the health experts to study and research the benefits it has on humans. Studies have shown that even in human beings Omega 3 has great health benefits when taken in suitable doses. However, we ned to get it through food and it is found abundantly in varieties of fish like Kipper, Mackerel, Menhaden, Pilchard, Salmon, Sardine, and Trout..

So one may ask what about vegetarians ?

There are many sources like Olive oil, Avocados , Soya bean oil and other Soya products and nuts like Macadamia, Pistachio, Peanuts, Almonds, Sesame, Cashew, Pecan and Hazelnuts which are rich sources of Omega 3 fatty acids .In fact , Olive oil has excellent health benefits all round. The low levels of heart disease in the Mediterranean region is mainly due to the fact that a lot of olive oil is consumed by the population in their daily diet.

The Importance of Omega -3 Fatty Acids in our diet

1, It plays a crucial role in the functioning of the brain as well as the normal growth and development of human beings. This itself shows that including Omega 3 in our daily diet is a must for a healty all round growth.

2, It also has anti inflammatory qualities thereby reducing the risk of heart attacks and other chronic heart ailments, cancer and arthritis.

3, It has been found that when children do not get enough Omega-3 fatty acids from their mothers during pregnancy may develop vision and nerve problems later in life.

4, Some of the symptoms related to the deficiency of Omega-3 fatty acids include fatigue, poor memory,dry skin, mood swings and depression.

5, Lack or defciency of Omega 3 is also known to affect blood circulation in human beings.

Eating a diet rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats is known to be benefitial for our heart. Fish oil which is known to be a rich source of Omega 3 fatty acid , is also known to lower triglycerides levels and risk of heart attack, stroke or abnormal heart rhythms in prople who have already had a heart attack.Getting Omega 3 in your diet primarily from fish,olive oil,nuts and soya products helps one build protection against heart strokes and attacks.

High Blood Pressure

A diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids is known to reduce blood pressure in people suffering from hyper tension. A diet consisting of fish,nuts , olive oil, garlic and fresh green vegetables has immense health benefits for those suffering from hypertension .


Most studies are of the opinion that Fish oil supplements for patients with type 2 Diabetes has a very positive effect .Most diabetes patients have high triglyceride and low HDL ( High-density lipoprotein ) levels.Omega 3 fatty acids can help lower triglycerides and raise HDL, and help in circulation problems normally found in diabetic patients.


A large survey conducted by researchers shows that a diet high in Omega 3 reduces the risk of cancer growth, slows down the progression and increases the rate of survival.This is true of patients suffering from Breast cancer, where many women who ate food rich in omega 3 fatty acids were less likely to develop breast cancer.Studies have shown that Fish oil also slows down the progression of colon cancer and Prostrate Cancer.

Pregnant and Nursing mothers

The benefit is in the development of the brian in the foetus. A pregannat woman should consider using Omega 3 acid pills or take it in the natural form by eating fish,nuts and food cooked in olive oil or by using it in salads. But this should be done after consulting and discussing with the doctor .Studies have also shown that Omega 3 can help decrease chances of recurring mis carriages in some women which is due to a condition called Anti- Phospholipid syndrome.

Asthma and ADHD

Asthmatic symptoms reduced considerably in patients when they were given Omega 3 fatty acid supplements for a period of 6 months. So it does have benefits in reducing health risks caused by Asthma and other related symptoms that lead to severe cases of Bronchitis.
Similarly, ADHD which is a problem with inattentiveness,impulsive behavior or over activity or a combination , Omega 3 fatty acid has a significant positive impact on the ability to perform better in school by increasing attention span and reduce dyslexia and dysphasia in growing children.

Omega 3 fatty acids also effectively control menstrual cramps .

How much is safe ?

A daily Dosage of 3 grams per day and less can be safely used by most people. Fish oils have been Generally Recognized as Safe . However , in some cases Doses greater than 3 grams per day are known to inhibit blood coagulation and potentially increase the risk of bleeding. But again this is not a generalisation. Fish oils in doses greater than 3 grams per day might also adversely affect immune function. It is always advisable to consult your doctor and discuss the pros and cons before taking omega fatty acid supplements. According to health experts, getting it from natural food items like fish and other sources mentioned poses very little risk for the system.

Good news for vegetarians comes with the news that researchers are investigating oils containing stearidonic acid (popularly referred to as SDA) from genetically modified plants as an alternative to fish oil as a source of Omega 3 fatty acids.SDA is metabolized to DHA and EPA in animals.However, further research is needed on the effects of SDA in humans as it is still early days.
