Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia which can occur due to absolute or it can also be due to relative deficiency of insulin or sometimes it can be due to both above mentioned causes that is absolute and relative deficiency of insulin.

         

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia which can occur due to absolute or it can also be due to relative deficiency of insulin or sometimes it can be due to both above mentioned causes that is absolute and relative deficiency of insulin.

Types-

1. Type 1 diabetes.

2. Type 2 diabetes.

3. Gestational diabetes mellitus.


1. Type 1 diabetes - Type 1 diabetes occurs due to destruction of beta cells upto 90% due to autoimmune process. In it there is absolute insulin deficiency.

Type 1 diabetes is further of two types-

i) Type 1A diabetes -
Type 1A diabetes which occurs due to destruction of beta cells of pancreas due to autoimmunity.

ii) Type 1B diabetes -
It occurs due to destruction of beta cells of islets of pancreas due to some unknown cause.

Type 1 diabetes affects mostly people below the age of 40 and above the age of 30 years. Weight loss with the symptoms of polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia is a sure sign of type 1 diabetes mellitus.


2. Type 2 diabetes -
Type 2 diabetes occurs due to various causes but not due to autoimmunity. There can be genetic causes. Obesity, overeating, over-nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, no workout or no exercise predispose to type 2 diabetes.

It occurs after the age of 40 years. The patient of type 2 diabetes is obese. Plasma insulin level is normal to high. It develops chronically, that is it has gradual onset and not sudden onset. Plasma glucagon level is high and resistant to insulin. There is family history of diabetes, which is responsible for genetic pre-disposition to diabetes.


3. Gestational diabetes mellitus
- gestational diabetes mellitus occurs in obese females during pregnancy which have genetic pre-disposition to diabetes.

Good information.It is useful for everyone to know the different types of diabetes and especially so now when the disease is spreading rampantly everywhere regardless of color and creed..
