The Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S is a powerful Android 2.3.4 smartphone with a hefty 1.4 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and a 4.2-inch display. The phone's features include a 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, 3D panorama, flashlight and 720 video recording, FM radio, microSD card, DLNA, Wi-Fi and GPS.



Body and Display:

The dimensions of the phone are 125 x 63 x 8.7 mm. It weighs about 117 grams. The type of the touchscreen is LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16M colours. In capacitive touchscreens, we can't use usual stylus. Capacitive touchscreens will work only if we touch using a conductor. Our body is a conductor. So we should use our fingers to work with capacitive touchscreen phones. The screen size is 4.2 inches with approximately 233 ppi pixel density. The screen resolution of the phone is 480 x 854 pixels.

The touchscreen is protected by Scratch-resistant glass - Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine, Timescape UI. It has multitouch feature also. Multitouch refers to the ability of a touch sensing surface to recognize the presence of two or more points of contact with the touch sensing surface.

Memory:

The phone has a microSD card slot. The slot supports up to 32GB memory card. 8GB memory card is included with the package. The internal memory of the phone is 1GB. But the user can access only 340MB internal storage. Remaining storage space is reserved. It also comes with 512MB Random Access Memory. The features of the Phonebook include Unlimited entries, Caller groups, Multiple numbers per contact, Search by both first and last name, Picture ID, Ring ID etc.

Features:

The phone comes with Android OS, v2.3.4 (Gingerbread) Operating System. Sony Ericsson has planned to upgrade the Operating System to v4.0. It also comes with 1.4 GHz Scorpion Central Processing Unit. The processor is the main computing component of a phone and is a major factor when it comes to the overall speed of the device. Some more powerful smartphones use dual core and quad core processors. This phone uses a single core processor only. The Chipset is Qualcomm MSM8255T Snapdragon. The GPU Adreno 205. It has sensors like Accelerometer, proximity, and compass. It has Stereo FM radio with RDS.

GPS is also availbale with A-GPS support. Global Positioning System is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near the Earth, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. Java is available via Java MIDP emulator.

It is available in different colours – Pure White, Midnight Blue, Misty Silver, Gloss Black, Sakura Pink. It supports MicroSIM card. It has key features like HDMI port, Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV player, MP3/eAAC+/WMA/WAV player, TrackID music recognition, NeoReader barcode scanner, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Facebook and Twitter integration, Document viewer, Voice memo/dial/commands, Predictive text input etc.

Connectivity:

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S utilizes both EDGE and GPRS technologies in order to connect to cellular networks. It is easy to get access to Internet through both Wi-Fi networks as well as HSPDA connections. It has the facility of Bluetooth connection and micro USB which help to connect with other hardware devices directly or indirectly.

Camera:

The set has a very powerful camera. It comes with 8 Megapixel primary camera. The resolution of the camera is 3264x2448. LED Flash feature is available. The other features of the camera include auto focus, Touch focus, geo-tagging, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama, image stabilization, continuous autofocus, video light, video stabilizer etc. It does not have a secondary camera on the front to make video calls. The phone records videos with the resolution of 720p and at the speed of 30fps.

Battery:

The phone is powered by standard Li-Po 1500 mAh battery. The stand by time provided by the battery is up to 460 hours in 2G networks and up to 460 hours in 3G networks. The talk time is up to 7 hours 25 minutes in 2G networks and up to 7 hours 35 minutes in 3G networks. The stand by time and talk time are good for a smartphone like this.

Market Status:

This model was announced on August, 2011. It was released on September, 2011.
