Liver : The most important organ of human body

Human body is made up of many organs like brain, heart, liver etc. Liver is the most important part of human body and performs different function to sustain life. In this article I am providing general introduction of structure of liver and functions performed by liver. To know more information related to liver please read this article.

         

Location and internal structure


Liver is the most important and largest gland of human body which not only helps in digestion but also performs many functions. Liver is reddish brown in colour and its weight is 1.6Kg in human body. Liver is situated in upper part of abdominal cavity. Liver consists of two lobes right and left. Liver is made up of pentagonal or hexagonal lobules. The lobules are surrounded by Glinson's Capsule . The lobules contain Kupffer's cells which are phagocytic in nature. Liver produce bile juice which are alkaline and helps in digestion. The bile juice is secreted in to small intestine and helps in the digestion of food.

Functions of liver


The functions of the liver are as below:

1. The most important function of liver is to produce bile juice. This juice helps in digestion. Liver produce bile juice and secret it in duodenum of small intestine along with pancreatic juice. Bile juice contain many salts and also contain Bilirubin and biliverdin which are the pigments of liver.

2. Liver controls the metabolic process of glucose in human body. The excess quantity of glucose is converted into glycogen and excess quantity of glycogen is converted into glucose when needed by liver. The process of converting glucose into glycogen is know as glycogenesis and the process of converting glycogen into glucose is called glycogenolysis.

3. Heparin is produce by liver which prevent the coagulation of blood in blood vessels.
During foetal life RBC is formed by liver.

4. Human body temperature is 37 degree Celsius which is maintained by liver through different metabolic process.

5. Liver decompose damaged RBC in our body and the pigment of RBC hemoglobin is converted into bilirubin which the main pigment of bile juice.

6. Vitamin A, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D are stored by liver.[/LIST]

7. Copper and iron are stored by liver which are necessary for the metabolic process performed by human body.

Conclusion


So, we can say that liver the second most important part of human body next to heart. Liver perform many functions and failure of liver may lead to death. The most common disease which is caused by the failure of liver is jaundice . The excess amount of bilirubin, which is the main pigment of bile juice spread all over the body and due to this body and skin of human body become yellow. So we should care this important part of our body by taking green vegetable daily in our diet.
