Alzheimer’s syndrome is increasing and people are often confused about dealing with patients. It is necessary to know about the causes and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s syndrome is fairly known to everyone these days. It is a disease which affects a person’s brain. The reduction of the cerebral cortex makes a person incapacitated and dependent on others. He or she will not be able to do any functions properly because the signals that the brain is supposed to give to other limb and organs will be severely affected.

What are the significant changes that the brain of an Alzheimer’s disease patient undergoes?

An increasing number of people are being affected by this wasting disease. Therefore it is important to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how it can affect the behavior of a person affected by it.

1. Gyri substances decrease. - Gyri are the folds in the brain.
2. Sulci spaces become larger. Sulci are the brain spaces.
3. Neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques build up and thus affect the brain. The tangles cause cell death.
4. Tissues shrink in the brain.
5. The chambers in the brain become large.
6. Cell degeneration in hippocampus causes loss of short term memory.
7. Memory will fade and the patient will not be able to do tasks properly.
8. The patient may repeat tasks that have already been done because of memory loss.
9. Failure to recognize people close to them.
10. Symptoms include anxiety, emotional trauma, wandering off behavior and incoherent language.
11. The patient will not be able to speak normally.

A patient who has both tangles and plaque will deteriorate quickly. Early diagnosis will help get treatment which can avoid misery for both the patient and relatives. It is to be understood that the Alzheimer’s patient will never be able to recover completely. Therefore a patient has to be looked after with the utmost care and affection. A person who is able to handle he patient both physically and mentally must be there for the patient at all times.

Some people have the tendency to shove their aged parents or relatives in old age homes. This is seen especially in countries like India. The aged people who have spent the majority of their good time in raising children and sacrificing their comforts are usually not taken care of by their children. If children cannot look after their parents properly, then they should admit them to care centers which will look after them properly. All the care is needed to give comfort to an Alzheimer’s patient. The patient should not be treated with contempt or mockery by others. Only those who will not provoke the patient should visit them. Thus an Alzheimer’s patient is the one who needs all the love before he or she departs.
