Eczema is an inflammatory hypersensitivity reaction of skin to the irritant or intolerable exogenous and endogenous agents.

1. Exogenous eczema.

1. Exogenous eczema
- is that type of eczema in which the causative agent comes from environment to which skin is hypersensitive. Exogenous eczema is further of two types-

i) Irritant contact eczema - which occurs due to repeated exposure to strong irritants like acids, harsh chemicals which cause acute eczema and to weak irritants like solvents, detergents, dust.

ii) Allergic contact eczema - occurs due to delayed hypersensitivity reaction to antigens or allergens on repeated exposure or contact with antigens or allergens.

2. Endogenous eczema - occurs due to causes within the body like genetic susceptibility and not from influence of outside environment. Endogenous eczema is further of different types, which are as follow-

i) Atopic eczema.

ii) Seborrhoeic eczema.

iii) Discoid eczema.

iv) Astcatotic eczema.

v) Gravitational eczema.

vi) Dyshidrotic eczema.

i) Atopic eczema - occurs due to genetic pre-disposition to form excessive IgE antibodies to incoming agents from outside the body from environment. Urticaria is main symptom.

ii) Seborrhoeic eczema - affects areas rich in sebaceous glands but not a disease of sebaceous glands. It occurs due to excessive growth of disease causing micro-organisms like Malassezia furfur and Pityrosporum ovale. Oily skin with crusted lesions is present with greasy scales. Dandruff of scalp is also there.

iii) Discoid eczema
- affects limbs of elderly males.

iv) Asteatotic eczema
- affects lower legs of hospitalized patients of elderly age group.

v) Dyshidrotic eczema
- affects palms, fingers and soles with recurrent vesicles.


1. Avoid allergic substances.

2. Moisturize the skin.

3. Medicine to treat the different types of eczema.

4. Also medicines to treat or reduce the susceptibility to the allergic substances.
