Stress and interpersonal conflicts

Stress is an inevitable phenomenon experienced by all human beings. Stress is healthy and enhances normal growth and development of an individual mentally and physically. When the level of stress exceeds the coping capacity of an individual it results in ill health, emotional and behavioral problems. This leads to interpersonal conflicts.

         

What is stress


Stress can be explained as the force or event that exceeds the coping capacity of an individual. Stress is any activity or event that is uncomfortable and not congenial. Lifestyle today is associated with stress. Stress is a normal phenomenon which is experienced by all. Stress is healthy, it increases our metabolic rates and keeps us fit. This is known as eustress. Eustress helps us to grow better mentally, physically, socially and psychologically. Outcome of chronic stress is known as distress. Distress is unhealthy.

Types of stress


Source of stress can be variable. Stress can occur because of negative factors like failures, frustrations, losses or debts, environmental conditions like air pollution, temperature, noise, etc. Stress causes changes in the physiological and psychological well being of a person. Stress can be of many types, a few of them are as follows:

a. Acute stress
This is the type of stress that arises from our daily activities. It is the most common type of stress from which individuals are likely to get affected. Few examples of it are, tension to reach office in time, daughter’s / son’s problem at school, loss of an important document, domestic help not being available in time, etc. The symptoms of acute stress are sudden. A person may experience a bad headache, backache, dizziness, muscular pain, irritability or inability to concentrate. Acute stress can make a person suffer from acidity, anxiety and loss of appetite. It can be treated. This type of stress is inevitable and cannot be ignored..

b. Chronic stress
Chronic stress occurs when an individual is unable to cope with or come out of a miserable situation. It can be an outcome of a long unhappy conjugal life, any major accident, loss of a job, some traumatic event in childhood, demise of a loved one, etc. Chronic stress affects a person both psychologically and physiologically. It makes a person unhealthy, melancholy and weakens the immune system. If left uncared and untreated, these people may attempt suicide or die due to heart attack or stroke. People suffering from chronic stress are not aware of their well being or distress. Chronic stress is harmful if it becomes a part of life.

c. Minor stress
Minor stress can be defined as stress that arises from our daily life activities. It is healthy, it energizes us. It is beneficial and essential. Minor stress is a part of adult life. Regular studies, peer pressure, anxiety to perform better than the others, work-life balance, trying best to fuel one’s career and family life, etc add to stress. We have no control over the ever changing activities around us and our surroundings. It is necessary to face these life events. These are universal phenomenon through which every individual has to pass through.

d. Major stress
Major stress can result from unforeseen natural calamities like floods, earthquakes, cyclones, etc. It can also occur due to some life threatening disease, divorce, accident resulting in loss of a limb, debts, etc. Terrorist attacks, riots or wars. It can affect an individual’s health both physically and mentally. This type of stress can be beyond the coping capacity of a person. Apart from the symptomatic treatment from a qualified medical professional these people need counseling, should undergo proper therapy and if needed consult a psychiatrist.

How stress leads to interpersonal conflicts


When an individual gets stressed up he / she is most likely to get physically, mentally or emotionally worked up. At times, pressure to manage or avoid the negative events or activities can be more stressful than the events or activities themselves. These factors lead to a situation where a person suffers from anxiety, anger, irritations and sadness. These are components of emotional imbalances. Emotional disturbance leads to improper behavior. Some may get sentimental, may start crying at small things instead of managing it. Some may show aggressiveness for no valid reason, others may try to avoid certain situations. In so doing he / she may get over worked-up or under worked-up as there is a dysfunction of the mind and body. This is a stage when conflicts occur. Interpersonal conflicts at work place or conjugal life is an outcome of the external expressions of a stressed up individual. Such an individual is physically, mentally and emotionally stressed up.

Suppression of the reactions of stress leads to ill health and mental disorders. Reactions may come out physically in the form of aches and pains, acidity, constipation, loss of libido or other sexual dysfunctions. Complications may lead to asthma, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, gastrointestinal problems and many such diseases. Psychologically a person may experience loss of appetite, mental fatigue, forgetfulness, sleeplessness, etc. This may lead to severe complications like anxiety, phobia, depression or hysteria. Too
much stress is a threat to our lifestyle and healthy relations. Conflicts result when different motives interfere with each other and cannot be resolved or satisfied in due time. Negative events in life result in stress. Positive life changes like marriage, job promotion or childbirth are also stressful. To avoid interpersonal conflicts arising due to stress, one should try to keep away from events that may stress him / her. Learn to respond appropriately to certain stressful situations. Bring changes within himself / herself to be able to adapt and adjust more comfortably, when the situation is unavoidable. Learn to accept the reality in a positive stride and be happy with life.
