If you could make one important change in a school that you attended, what change would you make?

If you could make one important change in a school that you attended, what change would you make? I would like to incorporate the use of TPL or theory practice learning. This method focuses on using both theory lessons in school and later, putting theory into practice with field trips, debates, discussions and live projects.

Different people may propose different changes in their schools. I studied in a small town in India. The school had good faculty but I would like to change the mode of instruction. There is too much emphasis is on theory but less on practical knowledge.

Firstly, when teachers focus more on theoretic learning, students will soon forget what they learn in the classroom. Moreover, not all students may pay attention while the teacher imparts the lesson. However, when theory is put into practice, students will pay more attention. Students will have more focus when they do things. For instance, reading and listening to English Grammar or Plays may seem boring to a few students. However, debates and discussions will make the class more lively and interactive.

Secondly, students will have interest in the subject when they learn something new everyday. Teachers should encourage more field trips to historical landmarks and science museums. I would also set up a projector so that students can see documentaries and discussions related to their coursework.

When students have practical knowledge along with theory in the class, they can retain the information for a longer time. When I was in college, our professor encouraged us to use the internet for research and took us to the museum of art history to explain the ancient Indian art forms. I remember those lessons until now.

Thus, to summarize, theory and practical knowledge are key factors of imbibing knowledge. When combined, they make classwork and assignments more interesting. Students can gain tremendous knowledge too. Hence, if given a chance, I will incorporate theory practice learning, a holistic approach to gain and retain knowledge.
