Hepatitis A - Symptoms, Risk factors, Treatment and Prevention

Hepatitis A is a liver disease. It is characterized by the inflammation of the liver. Inflammation is the painful, red swelling that results when tissues of the body become injured or infected. Hepatitis A disease is caused by Hepatitis A virus.

Symptoms:

Many people with Hepatitis A do not show any symptoms at all. However some people may have mild symptoms but they are not noticed. Symptoms of hepatitis A usually develop between 2 and 6 weeks after infection. The most common symptoms of hepatitis A include:
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, especially in children, low-grade fever, loss of appetite, rash, tiredness, fatigue, jaundice, darkish brown urine, and or pain in area of liver.

Risk Factors:

The risk factors of Hepatitis A include travelling to developing nations where Hepatitis A is a common disease, living with someone having Hepatitis A infection, using illegal drugs, alcohol consumption, men having sex with men etc.

Treatment:

Hepatitis A usually gets better in a few weeks without treatment. But taking rest and avoiding alcohol is advisable. If the symptoms persist for a long time, then consulting a doctor is a must. When a person recovers from Hepatitis A, his body automatically produces immunization against future attacks from Hepatitis A. However the person is prone to other types of Hepatitis.

Prevention:

One can avoid getting Hepatitis A by using Hepatitis A vaccine. The hepatitis A vaccine is given through two shots. The second shot is given 6 to 12 months after the first shot. Both shots are needed to be fully protected from the virus. Wash your hands with warm, soapy water after using toilets. Always use boiled water or purified water for drinking.
