Delirium tremens

What is delirium tremens?

Delirium tremens is a medical emergency situation. It is a condition of severe withdrawal symptoms that an alcohol addict experiences. The withdrawal symptoms can be physical or mental in nature. It occurs when a person may stop drinking after he had a heavy drink. Delirium tremens may arise after a few days or after 48-72 hours. It is variable and differs from individual to individual. It depends upon the health, energy and coping capacity of the body.

Vision problem
Severe, heavy sweating

Palpitations, headache, stomach pain, sweating.

Anxiety, nausea, vomiting
Gets aggressive or sentimental
Is too loud ( uncensored, inappropriate responses) or gets very quite

Who are at the risk of delirium tremens

1. People who have been heavy drinkers for a period of more than 10 years. It often occurs in people who get withdrawal symptoms when they abruptly stop drinking.
2. People who drink without taking appropriate amount of quality food.
3. People who are addicted to drinking and have ill health, infection, diabetes, hypertension, etc.
4. People who are misery drinkers, they desire to forget the realities of life. They are escapists and do not want to struggle hard. They intoxicate themselves so much so as to get unconscious.
5. When such addicts meet with some road accidents, have a head injury or any major injury.

Blood disorders

Permanent loss of memory

Short life span

Management of Delirium tremens

1. Immediate hospitalization and management.
2. Electroencephalogram (EEG)
3. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
4. Blood tests, Tests to determine toxicity in the blood.
5. Diagnostic treatment to be started
6. Symptomatic treatment to be started
7. Counseling and family support
8. Rehabilitation if required.

Recovery cannot take place in a fortnight. Patience and sincere efforts to get well are the key to get back to work or re- enter the academic stream. After an individual recovers he/she should have a positive attitude towards life. He/she should try to re-build the lost relations, should be able to handle stress and try to spread awareness and share one’s experiences with others to save their life and prevent them from getting into similar misery.
