An aneurysm is an abnormal widening or ballooning of a portion of an artery due to weakness in the wall of the blood vessel. Aneurysm involving an aorta is called an aortic aneurysm. Aorta is one of the largest arteries which carries blood from heart to other parts of the body. At the site of aneurysm, the aorta bulges. The aorta is called the abdominal aorta after it has passed the diaphragm and continues down the abdomen. The abdominal aorta ends where it splits to form the two iliac arteries that go to the legs.

Causes:

The most common cause of abdominal aortic aneurysm is arteriosclerosis condition. Arteriosclerosis may be termed as the hardening of the artery. 80% of aortic aneurysms are formed due to arteriosclerosis. Other causes may include genetic or hereditary reasons, genetic disease, Arteritis, Mycotic infection etc.

Risk Factors:

Abdominal aortic aneurysms are more common in persons aging above 60 years. Males are five times more likely than females to be affected. Approximately 5% of men over age 60 develop an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The risk factors include cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, high serum cholesterol, diabetes mellitus etc.

Symptoms:

Most of the abdominal aortic aneurysms produce no symptoms at all. They are accidentally diagnosed abdominal ultrasounds and/or CT scan studies are done for some other purposes. The most common symptom in abdominal aortic aneurysm is pain. The pain will be steady in the person but it can be relieved by changing the position. Fastly expanding abdominal aortic aneurysm may cause sudden, severe, steady middle abdominal and back pain.

Treatment:

The only available method to treat this aneurysm is surgery. The main goal of surgery is to prevent the rupture of aneurysm. A less invasive procedure for aortic aneurysm is endovascular surgery.
