Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is cessation or stoppage of breathing or airflow into nose and mouth intermittently during sleep. It occurs for a minimum of ten seconds.

         

Sleep apnoea is cessation or stoppage of breathing or airflow into nose and mouth intermittently during sleep. It occurs for a minimum of ten seconds. It is of two types which are as follow-

1. Obstructive sleep apnoea.

2. Central sleep apnoea.


1. Obstructive sleep apnoea-

Obstructive sleep apnoea occurs in obese people usually males of middle age group. It usually occurs during sleep, when there occurs, obstruction of upper airway usually caused by pharyngeal closure.

Symptoms-

i) Hypoxemia.

ii) Wakes the patient from sleep of which patient is unaware, as it is of very short duration of few seconds.

iii) Daytime sleepiness and decreased concentration and performance rate.

iv) Hypertension secondary to chronic hypoxemia.

v) Hypercapnia, pulmonary hypertension, snoring.


Investigations-

i) History taking.

ii) Pulse oximetry.

iii) Sleep study using polysomnography.

iv) ECG, electro-oculography.

v) EEG, measurement of apnoea-hypopnoea index.


2. Central sleep apnoea-

Central sleep apnoea occurs due to failure of respiratory centre due to neurological lesions. It can also occur due to cardiovascular diseases and can also occur at high altitude.
