Review of the Inspiron 15R Special Edition

July 18, 2012  by: Abhijit Bangal  Points: 12   Category: Gadgets  Earning $0.50   Views: 944

The Inspiron 15R Special Edition is a special edition notebook introduced by Dell. The plus-minus points of the notebook can make you think twice before buying it.

Dell is a big name in the tech world. Just recently they launched Special Edition notebooks. These are primarily targeted at being used for multimedia and the sake of entertainment. These notebooks are built with Ivy Bridge CPUs. Audio output is given preference in the notebooks. Here is more about the notebook.

The design
The anodized aluminum is used in the framework of the notebook. It gives an added strength to the notebook and that in turn means more durability. The keyboard is built in such a way so as to avoid your finger prints being printed on it. At the same time, you can also get a nice grip when working with the keyboard. There is a rubber ring from all the sides that help in protecting the gadget from the dust.

The built
The built of the notebook certainly is a strong one. It won’t be exaggeration to call it a macho one. The reason is its weight. The notebook weighs as much as 2.5 kg (or even more). That is why it is not at all suitable to carry it along. This shows that it is built to be used only at one single place and take it with you.

The connectivity
Dell has dealt with the connectivity options in a number of ways. They are the LAN jack, HDMI, USB 3.0 ports (there are four such ports), VGA and the DVD burner.

The keyboard
The Dell product does not come with a backlit keyboard. This may be a downside for the product. However, the plus point is that the keyboard is super cool to use. Even if you have long sessions of typing, there is nothing that can stop you from doing so. The keys do not trouble you at all.

The placement of the speakers
The speakers of the Inspiron 15R Special Edition are very wisely placed beneath the notebook. That gives it an added advantage of the sound bouncing off the surface. It amplifies the sound even further adding the extra touch of magic to it.

CPU and Processor
The notebook runs on Intel Core i5-3210M processor that runs at a speed of 2.5 GHz with a Turbo frequency of 3.1GHz. This is what we know as the dual-core CPU with HyperThreading. That should be more than a sufficient amount processing for the routine use. So, that should help in carrying out jobs in Photoshop quite easily too.
There is the CGN style in the new CPU. This can also help in reducing the power consumption as well.

The Inspiron 15R Special Edition comes with 1TB of hard drive and 4 GB or RAM. Apart from this, there is also the AMD Radeon HD 7730M with 2 GB of dedicated graphics. All works excellently when paired together like this.

The Li-Ion battery is one big and really huge disappointment. Though it has six cells, the backup one gets is pretty ordinary with only around four hours. Given the fact that the notebook we are talking about comes from the house of Dell, it should have been even better. Secondly, the weight of the notebook should have been taken into consideration when fitting the battery. It is not easy to carry the notebook around and so should have had a better backup.

The dimensions (W x D x H) of the gadget are 347 mm x 240 mm x 34.1 mm.

Operating system
The operating system in the Inspiron 15R Special Edition is Windows 7. It makes use of the Home Premium 64-bit version.

The notebook is available for Rs. 50,490 in India.
