Primary pulmonary tuberculosis occurs from inhalation of tubercle bacillus which gets deposited in the alveolus and infects the lung.


Primary pulmonary tuberculosis occurs from inhalation of tubercle bacillus which gets deposited in the alveolus and infects the lung. It is called primary pulmonary tuberculosis because primary site of infection is alveolus of lungs and there is no history of any other secondary site of tuberculosis in the body at that time.


1. Primary pulmonary tuberculosis usually affects children and there is history of contact with an active case of tuberculosis in affected child.

2. Most of the cases are asymptomatic. Very few cases exhibit symptoms of flu like febrile illness which resolve in seven to fourteen days.

3. But if the disease becomes severe, then there is weight loss, decreased appetite and ill health.

4. Dry cough with general signs and symptoms of general debility in severe cases.

5. Erythema nodosum on the shins, fever and polyarthralgia in some cases.

6. Tuberculin reaction test is positive.


1. History of contact with active case of tuberculosis.

2. Tuberculin test.

3. Chest X-ray.

4. Sputum test.

5. Sputum culture.
