Chronic bronchitis affects males more than females as it affects smokers and middle age and old age patients more than others.


Chronic bronchitis is inflammation of bronchioles of lungs in which there is excessive tracheobronchial mucus production which cause cough with expectoration for more than three months in a year for more than two consecutive years.

It affects males more than females as it affects smokers and middle age and old age patients more than others.


1. Cigarette smoking.

2. Air pollution.

3. Excessive exposure to dust, smoke and harmful gases.

4. Toluene diisocyanate.

5. Sulphur dioxide.

6. Genetic susceptibility.

7. Parental history of smoking.

8. Infections.

1. Hypertrophy and hyperplasia of mucus secreting glands and goblet cell hyperplasia.

2. History of cough with scanty, mucoid expectoration for many years. Sometimes expectoration can be blood stained. There is late onset of dyspnoea.

3. Initially cough is present only in winters, which is aggravated in morning. But with the progress of disease and with increasing severity of disease it starts remaining for whole year.

4. Obesity is also there.


1. Chest x-ray.

2. ECG.

3. Pulmonary function tests.

4. Arterial blood gas studies.

5. Sputum test.

6. Sputum culture and sensitivity test.


1. Exercise.

2. Balanced diet.

3. Weight loss in obese patients should be done.

4. Stop smoking.

5. Avoid dusty and air polluted areas as it may aggravate the symptoms.

6. Treat respiratory infections with appropriate antibiotics.

7. Medicines.

8. Chest physiotherapy.

9. Oxygen therapy only in cases where seems indicated.
