Bronchial obstruction can be caused due to various reasons. It can be complete or partial depending upon the cause.


Bronchial obstruction can be caused due to various reasons. It can be complete or partial depending upon the cause. Bronchial obstruction can be present with or without secondary infection depending upon the cause.


Bronchial obstruction can be caused by different reasons or causes which are as follow-

1. Bronchial carcinoma or bronchial adenoma.

2. Tuberculosis.

3. Malignancy.

4. Enlarged tracheobronchial lymph nodes.

5. Foreign body obstructed in the airways.

6. Collection of excessive mucus in bronchus.

7. Congenital bronchial atresia.

8. Aortic aneurysm.


1. In case of complete obstruction, mediastinum shifts to the side of collapse and also there is absent or diminished breath sounds.

2. In partial obstruction, there is obstructive emphysema and breath sounds are diminished. There is difficulty in breathing specifically during expiration than during inspiration.

3. Sometimes, there occurs secondary bacterial infection of lung distal to obstruction.

4. Sudden occlusion of main bronchus can result in severe breathlessness and hypoxaemia.

5. Blood clots produce bronchial obstruction following severe haemoptysis.


1. Chest X-ray.

2. Bronchoscopy.

3. Biopsy.
