Pneumothorax is a respiratory disease in which air is present in pleural cavity. Pneumothorax is of different types. The main important types of pneumothorax are as follow-

1. Closed spontaneous pneumothorax.

2. Open spontaneous pneumothorax.

3. Tension or valvular pneumothorax.

4. Recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax.

5. Catamenial pneumothorax.

6. Clicking pneumothorax.

1. Closed spontaneous pneumothorax-
In closed spontaneous pneumothorax, the communication between pleura and lungs seal off and does not reopen. Due to this air can neither enter nor leave the pleural space and gets trapped and which slowly gets reabsorbed and lungs expand again completely to its normal position in two to four weeks.

Difficulty in breathing is the main symptom in closed spontaneous pneumothorax which is present for few days and gets resolved very soon if pneumothorax is small one.

2. Open spontaneous pneumothorax-
In open spontaneous pneumothorax, there is communication between bronchus and pleura, which result in bronchopleural fistula which further cause empyema by facilitating spread of infection into pleural space.

Breathlessness is the main symptom of open spontaneous pneumothorax but if the infection gets spread in pleural space then fever and other systemic symptoms also gets developed.

3. Tension or valvular pneumothorax-
In tension or valvular pneumothorax, there is communication between the pleura and lungs but it is one way that is it allows air to get into pleural space during inspiration but not allow it to escape. Due to this when large amount of air gets trapped in pleural space and intrapleural pressure becomes high which results in compression of underlying lung and shift of mediastinum to opposite side.

Breathlessness is as usual the main symptom of tension pneumothorax along with the presence of central cyanosis and rapid thready pulse with peripheral circulatory failure.

4. Recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax-
Recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax occurs in patients with emphysematous bullae.

5. Catamenial pneumothorax-
It occurs in females of twenty to thirty years of age group. It usually occurs within forty eight hours of onset of menstruation.

6. Clicking pneumothorax-
In it there is small left sided pneumothorax which is present in front of pericardium, due to which heart sound make them sound loud and resonant known as clicking sound from where it has been named as clicking pneumothorax.
