Broccoli belongs to the cabbage family and resembles a cauliflower. The botanical name of broccoli is Brassica oleracea. There are two types of broccoli, the first is bright green in colour while the other variety is purple green. Highest productions take place in California. Broccoli had its origin in Italy 2000 years ago.

Nutritive value of broccoli


  • Broccoli is very rich in antioxidants, vitamin A and C, beta-carotene.

  • It is high in mineral contents like potassium, calcium, sodium, zinc, magnesium, iron, selenium, manganese, fluoride and isothiocyanates (ITCs).

  • Broccoli has a lot of fiber content which is good for health.

  • Broccoli intake reduces the risk of many types of cancers including prostrate cancer.

  • It consumption is good for the heart and has the potential to strengthen up the immune system of the body.

  • The calcium contents helps to keep the bones healthy and strong, potassium content plays a good role on the muscles and the nervous system.

  • Eating broccoli sprouts has many health benefits.

Boiling broccoli may reduce the nutritive contents. Eating broccoli in salads or as stir fry dishes with carrots, beets, lettuce and onions makes he flavour delicious and nutritive.

Try growing broccoli in your kitchen garden


You can try to grow broccoli in your kitchen garden. Broccoli can be planted from March to August. It is a cool weather plant. Germination takes place in 6-8 days. Before sowing the seeds make sure that the soil in your kitchen garden is rich in manure and compost. Sow the seeds in such a way that they are at least 2-3 inches apart. This is to give them space to grow and get sufficient sunlight and water. Cover the seeds with soil. Water the seeds with care till they germinate into baby plants. As the plants grow you need to water them properly, they have shallow roots and may dry up. You will love to see them bloom in your kitchen garden. If you get successful with kitchen garden broccoli plantation you can try it on a bigger space next season.
