Acute Leukaemia

Acute leukaemia is a disease in which there is failure of cell maturation, proliferation of immature cells which fill up the bone marrow and ultimately release these immature cells into peripheral blood.

Types-

1. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

2. Acute myeloblastic leukaemia.


Symptoms-

1. Anaemia.

2. Granulocytopenia in which there is fever, septicaemia.

3. Thrombocytopenia results in bleeding tendencies.

4. Expanding or increasing cell mass in bone marrow which causes bone pains and sternal tenderness.

5. Leukaemic infiltration of liver, spleen and lymph nodes mainly. It also affects mouth, gums, skin, bones and eyes. But in advanced cases, there occurs leukaemic infiltration of brain parenchyma, spinal cord parenchyma and meninges of brain.

6. Hepatosplenomegaly and generalized lymphadenopathy.


Investigations-

1. Hb test.

2. Peripheral blood smear test.

3. MCV test.

4. TLC, DLC tests.

5. Platelet count test.

6. Bone marrow test.

7. Liver function tests.

8. Renal function tests.

9. CT, BT test.

10. Plasma LDH and plasma uric acid test.

11. Lumbar puncture test.
