Do you have leg spasms at night? It can happen due to prolonged hours of standing, strenuous exercise, exhaustion and fatigue. Dehydration, improper nutrition and overweight can also cause leg cramps and leg spasms.


People often mistake leg spasms and leg cramps to be the same. Leg cramps happen due to continuous occurrence of leg spasms. When you feel sudden contraction of one muscle or a muscle group, it is a spasm. Too many leg spasms lead to cramping. If you stand for a long time, walk or exercise for prolonged time, it is natural to feel some leg pain. Activities like aerobics, running, jogging and swimming can initially cause some leg pain. This is because you are new to such activities. Therefore, nutritionists recommend high intake of fiber and protein for people who exercise regularly.

Doctors say leg spasms are common occurrence due to medications, fatigue, exhaustion, dehydration and so on. Wrong postures during exercise can also cause leg spasms. Think of the time when you sit hunchbacked in a chair. Your back and spine feel some pain. This is due to wrong posture. Similarly, when you exercise in wrong posture, your legs feel the pain. Even age can be a factor for leg spasms. Seniors and elderly people often feel exhaustion and fatigue. Moreover, they might take medications for some health condition. All these can be factors for leg spasms.

Obesity and Spasms in legs

Body weight also plays an important role in leg cramps and leg spasms. Your legs bear your body weight. Hence, the more you weight, the higher is the pressure on your legs. As a result, you experience pain in your knees and hamstrings. Therefore, it is a good idea to exercise at least 30 minutes every day and eat a balanced diet.

Leg Cramps Remedies

Do not worry; there are many good remedies for leg spasms and leg pain. If you recently began to workout at the gym, you may feel some pain in your feet and ankles. The best cure is to soak the feet in some warm water. Add little salt and soothing bath salts to this water. It will help you relax and alleviate the pain. Here are some more remedies.

Hydrate and Drink Water

Carry a bottle of water to the gym. Refill it during your exercise. It is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. In some vitamin stores, you can find the energy drinks called Vitamin Water and EcoDrink. Both these are good for leg pains and fatigue. These are rich in vitamins and replenish the lost energy.

Stretch before Workout

When you attend fitness classes in the gym, you will see that the instructors insist on stretches before and after the workout. This is an important step and you should not ignore it. As you stretch, your muscles relax and it prevents cramps or spasms too.

Nutrition for Leg Spasms

Nutrition and diet are very important to cure leg spasms and leg cramps. You should include more protein, good carbohydrates and fiber in your food. Adding more fruits gives you the necessary vitamins and antioxidants. A diet that is high in fiber and protein is good for building strong muscles and helps in reducing leg spasms.

All these tips will help you cure the leg spasms. You can also try some message and therapy if the problem persists for long time. Ask your doctor about the medication for leg spasms and discuss about your lifestyle. Then, your doctor can recommend better physical therapy and exercises to soothe the pain due to leg spasms.

I usually have cramps in my legs..So I stretches the leg muscles whenever I do any exercise or
walk/run...The legs are the parts used for the locomotion bt The proper body weight bearing is also depends on legs...Thanks..
