Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, holds a great significance to life not only to the Muslims but also for all. The fasting and other practices during this month are intended to rejuvenate body, mind and soul and build up relationships.

Ramadan rejuvenates body, mind and soul

Ramadan is a time of purification and rejuvenation to the body, mind and soul. It is period of purifying and strengthening the body with daytime fasting. The body is enabled to rejuvenate and repair the damage caused through wrong practices of diet and habits.

Ramadan for self control

Ramadan is the month for self control. From dawn to dusk one is expected to observe fast, by abstaining from food, drink and sex. When this practice is observed for the whole month it really provides effective results in human behavior. Muslims observe fasting during Ramadan as an obligation of religion, although the spiritualists and health experts list out many benefits of fasting. Holy Qur'an insists that it should benefit the whole humanity. The Holy Book mentions it an a “Taqwa” which means self-restraint. Observation of fasting is intended to control the two most basic human urges, namely the digestive and the reproductive. If they are controlled, the senses and the mind come under control and temptations are conquered.

Ramadan rejuvenates mind and builds up one’s character

Ramadan is not for just avoiding food and drink. It rejuvenates the mind by thinking of others and doing charitable deeds for them. It is a month of loving others. Prophet Muhammad said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, God is not in need of his abstinence from food and drink.” Extending love to others in words and deeds is the purpose of taqwa in Ramadan observance.

Ramadan rejuvenates the soul and promotes universal brotherhood

Ramadan is the month in which the Muslims are motivated to be away from the worldly pleasures and decide to think of the needs of others. When one thinks of others in real affection, surely it promotes universal brotherhood. Islam prescribes the mandatory charity called the “Sadqatul Fitr” which is sharing with the poor.

Ramadan is a month of forgiveness when affection flows multiplying earthly and heavenly blessings. It strengthens soul with prayers and penance. This month guides the faithful to retrospect ones own ways and rectify life with the help of the guiding light. This month strengthens and prepares one to walk in the right path, shining through the dark alleys of human greed. The soul is nourished and rejuvenated to guide body and mind in living a better life.

Let the whole world enjoy Eid with a spirit of universal brotherhood

Ramadan is a month of blessing. Muslims wait eagerly for the fasting month of Ramadan which brings them bountiful blessings. It is to rejuvenate the whole world, torn in selfishness and greed. The month of Ramadan and the holy observance is intended to create a new heaven on earth. It aims at rejuvenating the individual as well as the whole humanity.

There is no doubt that every religion teaches the best of the positive things. The month of Ramadan for the Muslim brothers and the Shravana for the Hindu brothers coincide with each other. That is how we respect the feelings for each other. And I don''t think there should be any other reason to put forward to maintain peace and brotherhood.
