Causes of Indoor Air Pollution

Air pollution happens not only due to industrial pollutants and due to waste products. Even indoor air can be polluted. When you use faulty heating and cooling systems, smoke and use chemical paints and cleaners, you have polluted air inside the home.

These include mold, mildew, pollen and dust particles. When you come from outdoors, you bring all these pollutants into the house. Without regular cleaning and maintenance, you have polluted air inside the home.

When you hear or talk about air pollution, you refer to environmental pollution. One usually refers to vehicles, factories and industrial pollutants that cause air pollution. However, many of us forget the importance of fresh air within our homes. Did you ever consider that pollution inside the homes can also cause allergies or respiratory problems?

Several pollutants harm the air quality inside the homes. With modern technology, you can find simple and inexpensive cures to eliminate indoor air pollution.

Indoor air pollutants mentioned above are hazardous for you and your family. Pollen, mold and bacteria cause skin and respiratory allergies. These are also culprits for frequent fevers, flu and respiratory problems. If you have a pet at home, then you have the additional headache of pet dander, pet hair and other issues.

We use the refrigerators, computers, laptops, copiers and kitchen appliances every day. All these also emit pollution. When not in use, turn off the gadgets like televisions, computers and copiers. When you travel out of town for a few days, clean your refrigerator and turn it off.

How to Prevent Indoor Air Pollution

You can use simple tips to prevent indoor air pollution. Use organic paints instead of the toxic chemical paints for the home. Regularly clean the home cooling and heating systems . Clean the air filters and humidifiers. Most of the dust traps into these filters and you tend to breathe dirty air if you do not clean the air systems in the house.

-If you have pets , train them for potty and urine. Regularly clean your carpets for dirt, mud and dust particles. Use organic home cleaners. You can buy organic carpet cleaners and home cleaners at any regular stores.

-Ventilation is important to improve indoor air quality. Use closed fireplaces or HEPA heaters instead of wood fireplaces. Keep windows open while baking, home cleaning and cooking. Use a chimney or fan in the kitchen to reduce the humidity. Such humid air increases the chances of mildew, grease and mold in the home.

-Organic air fresheners are better than the artificially scented ones. You can use organic and handmade candles or homemade air fresheners. Baking soda is a great product that absorbs odor and freshen the indoor air within minutes.

Overall, the best way to improve the indoor air quality is to reduce clutter, regularly clean the furnishings, clean the carpets once in two weeks, do not smoke inside the home and regularly wash your laundry. All these are simple tips and we all do it. However, when you neglect the cleaning and maintenance of your home, you breathe stale air and fall sick.
