Anxiety and stress can affect your health in so many ways if they exceed their limits. Any medical issue can be accompanied with anxiety. It has a stronger impact on oral health since it affects eating. Beware of anxiety, because it also may affect your dental health.


Anxiety is the forerunner of stress. Stress leads to many health hazards. Anxiety adds the apprehension that something bad is going to happen. It is an inner warning about the future mishap. It can be general or specifically focused on something. Although there are some positive effects from anxiety, anxiety creates unnecessary troubles when it is beyond limit. The negative effects of anxiety have to be recognized and controlled.

Anxiety becomes a physical problem

Most of the people think that anxiety is only a mental or psychological problem. But anxiety is not a health problem of the mind only. Symptoms of anxiety are expressed through the physical conditions of the body. Many people do not realize these physical symptoms since they more occupied with their anxiety or worries. They too anxious to take any step to stop or reduce their anxiety.

1) Dental anxiety is a kind of phobia, feeling so nervous or fearful about a visit to the dentist that it pulls you back from your visit to the dentist for your dental care and health. This may occur as fear of pain, or treatment with needles, drilling, etc.

2) Even other ailments not directly related to teeth may affect dental health. Chronic pain can lead to dental conditions such as jaw clenching, referred as TMJ. The joint between the skull and the jaw is affected.

3) Teeth grinding and gum diseases also follow anxiety. Diabetes can deteriorate gum conditions and affect dental health.

4) Anxiety and stress can encourage smoking, which discolors teeth and damages gums. This, inturn, leads to poor diet and causes a negative impact on dental health.

5) Dental anxiety causes more troubles during the treatment also, complicating the treatment process.

Tips for reducing dental anxiety

1) The dentist should be aware of the dental anxiety of the patient. The patient should inform his anxiety frankly so that the dentist would take steps to reduce anxiety.

2) Generally dentists offer Nitrous Oxide gas to the dental patients to help them relax prior to medication.

3) The dentists have various techniques to help people having dental anxiety. They should be aware of the patient’s situation.
